Brief CV: Ana Carvalho has a degree in Design and Visual Communication from ESAD – Matosinhos School of Art and Design (1994), a Master’s in Interactive Art and Design from University College Falmouth (2004) and a PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms from FLUP (2013). She has lectured at University College Falmouth, University Fernando Pessoa, University of São Paulo and ISMAI – University Institute of Maia. She has been the coordinator of the Arts and Multimedia course at ISMAI since 2017.
Research Interests: She has devoted her scientific research – published in Portugal and abroad – to several fields: audio-visual, performance, composition and the relationship between the ephemeral and documentation. She is currently a member of both CIAC – Centre for Research in Arts and Communication (University of Algarve) and CITEI – Research Centre in Technologies and Intermedia Studies (ISMAI).
She has been presenting audio-visual performances (United Kingdom, France, United States, Brazil, Portugal) since 2004, and between 2005 and 2009, she co-edited, together with Brendan Byrne, the VJ Theory research project, which published both online and in print theoretical works related to performance synchronised with sound and image. She organized several events, among them the opening event in Lisbon. She writes regularly for the Digicult online magazine about national artistic practices. In 2012 she was granted the scholarship Ernesto de Sousa. She started the Ephemeral Expanded research project in 2014. She has been part of Unstable Media, a curatorial collective, since 2016.
