Brief CV: Vitor Tomé has a Teaching Degree in Primary Education, specializing in Portuguese and French, from the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (2002), a post-graduation in Educational Sciences – Educational Technologies, from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2004), a post-graduation in Journalism in Portuguese Language, from the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE), a PhD in Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Education (Media Education), from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2008) and is currently completing a post-doctorate in Communication Sciences at the University of Algarve (SFRH/BPD/77874/2011; 2012-2018), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. He was a visiting adjunct professor at the Schools of Education of both the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco and the University of Algarve. He was also a visiting assistant professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, as well as a visiting professor at Hosei University (Tokyo, Japan) and at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
Research Interests: He has dedicated his career to Media Education / Media Literacy and Education for Digital Citizenship. He is currently a member a team of eight specialists who develop the “Digital Citizenship Education” project (2016-2019), promoted by the Council of Europe. He is a researcher for the Action “COST IS1410 – The digital literacy and multimodal practices of young children – DigiLitEY” (2015-2018), the project “Competências Mediáticas para a Cidadania” [Media Skills for Citizenship] (2015-…), and of AlfaMed – Euro-American inter-university research network. As a result of his post-doctoral program, he coordinates the project Education for Digital Citizenship and Democratic Participation in the Region of Odivelas, an action research project with students attending pre-school, 1st and 2nd Cycles, as well as teachers, parents/guardians and the remaining educational community. He has participated in the following international projects: Key factors for success and continuity of schooling paths of Gypsies: individuals, families and public policy (PTDC / IVC-PEC / 4909/2012; 2013-2015), Mediane – Media in Europe for Diversity Inclusiveness (2013-2014; Council of Europe and European Union); No Hate Speech – Young People for Human Rights Online (2012-2014; Council of Europe); The use of social media for democratic participation (2012-2014; Council of Europe); Media Against Racism in Sport (2012-2014; Council of Europe and European Union); EuroMeduc – A European exchange network for media literacy (2008-2009; European Union). At national level, he was a researcher in several projects such as “Media Education in Castelo Branco region” (PTDC/CED/70600/2006; 2007-2011), which was based on his PhD research; “Children and Youths in the News” (POCI/COM/60200/2004; 2004-2008), and he also coordinated the study “Monitorização de informação comercial relativa a produtos alimentares e bebidas em escolas do 1º Ciclo em Portugal” [Monitoring commercial information on food products and beverages at Portuguese primary schools” in 2012, 2013 and 2014, funded by the Portuguese Advertisers Association (APAN).
