José Bogalheiro is an integrated researcher at CIAC – Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação. He is a retired coordinating professor of the Film Department at ESTC – Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, an institution where, between 1981 and 2020, he also held management positions, namely as a member of the Installation Committee and as director of the Film Department.

He studied Journalism at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He graduated in Psychology from the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada (ISPA). He studied Cinema at the National Conservatory Film School. He has a PhD in Psychology, specializing in Psychoanalysis, from the Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida (ISPA-IU).

Following his training in cinema and a first professional experience in the TV/Cinema Team of the Secretary of State for Emigration (1977-78), he worked in the film industry in various roles, particularly as a producer at Trópico Filmes (1985-1995).

At ESTC, he taught courses in the BA in Cinema (“Aesthetics” and “Psychology and Cinema”), the MA in Film Project Development (“Independent Production and Markets”) and the PhD in Arts – Performing Arts and the Moving Image (“Image”).

Research Interests

As a recipient of a grant from the Italian government, he carried out research at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome (1979-81) on “Point of view in cinema and cinematic neorealism”. He then made the question posed by contemporary filmmaking reverberate throughout his teaching and research activities, asking whether “there is modern cinema that hasn’t made its journey to Italy? “, focusing in his doctoral thesis on the filmic experience as a paradoxical experience of the spectator and, in his most recent writings, on cinema as a metamorphosis of inner experience.
