Manuel Célio Conceição

Manuel Célio Conceição, who has a PhD in linguistics, is an associate professor with tenure at the University of the Algarve. Among many other positions at the University of the Algarve, he has held the positions of pro-rector and director of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is currently vice-president of the General Council of the University of the Algarve.

He was vice-president of the European Language Council between 2013 and 2015 and then president between 2015 and 2017, and is currently ex-officio president and representative of CEL/ELC at the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities (EASSH), of which he was a founder. Until 2023, he was president of the Lexicology, Terminology and Translation Network of the Agence Française de la Francophonie. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Pan-Latin Terminology Network (REALITER), the International Association of Portuguese Linguistics (AILP) and a board member of the Terminology and Language Policy Observatory (OTPL) at the Catholic University of Milan. He is the editor of the European Journal of Language Policy and a member of the scientific committees of several specialized journals, including Sustainable Multilingualism, TRADTERM, Polissema, Plaisance, L’analisi linguística e letteraria, Linguarum arena, Sciences de l’homme, and is an evaluator of grants and research projects for agencies/foundations in several European countries and European programs.

He is the coordinator of the science communication group at the European Alliance of Universities SEE – EU, European University of the Seas. Within the same alliance, he is a member of the working group on language policies and multilingualism management.
She represents SEA EU in the specialized group on multilingualism in the consortium of European University Alliances.

She teaches courses in Portuguese and French linguistics, general linguistics, terminology and language policies and seminars in theories of language science and research methodology. She has participated in various European projects such as LANQUA, MAGICC, DYLAN, MIME and LISTIAC.

At the invitation of the General Inspectorate of Education and Science, he is an expert evaluator in the field of external evaluation of schools and at ANQEP he is an expert evaluator of the quality system for vocational schools.

The French Republic awarded him the degree of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (2013) and Officer of the same Order in 2023. The Municipality of Faro awarded him the city’s gold medal of honor in 2016.
