
Sílvia Leiria Viegas
Sílvia Leiria Viegas earned her PhD in Architecture from the University of Lisbon (2015) with the thesis Luanda, the (Un)Predictable City? Governance and Urban and Housing Transformation: Intervention Paradigms and Resistances in the New Millennium; she was an FCT postdoctoral fellow (SFRH/BPD/118022/2016) to develop the research INSEhRE 21. Socio-Spatial and Housing Inclusion of Refugees in Today’s Europe: Lessons from the African Diaspora in Portugal (2017-2022) at the Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra (CES/UC); she is a researcher at the Center for Research in Arts and Communication, University of Algarve (CIAC/UAlg), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (2021.03008.CEECIND/FCT), to develop the project Refugee Research for (Post)Covid-19. National Measures and Local Actions in the Algarve: a Digital Tour for Access to Adequate Housing and Living Conditions.
Sílvia Leiria Viegas participated in the Global Report on Culture and Sustainable Urban Development: Regional Survey for Portuguese Speaking Countries, produced by UNESCO for the New Urban Agenda, within the context of the UN’s Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (2016); in the Mediterranean City-to-City Migration Project (2017), produced by UN-Habitat and United Cities and Local Governments with Bartlett/DPU/UCL; in the Africa Habitat project: From the Sustainability of Habitat to the Quality of Inhabit in the Urban Margins of Luanda and Maputo (2018/2022), funded by FCT/Aga Khan; and in the project How to Stay at Home? Immediate Interventions to Combat Covid-19 in Slums of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (2020), funded by FCT. She was also part of COST Action CA19129 – Decolonising Development: Research, Teaching and Practice (DecolDEV) from 2020 to 2024. She is currently a member of two other COST Actions, respectively, CA22135 – Data Matters: Sociotechnical Challenges of European Migration and Border Control (DATAMIG, 2023-2027) and CA22149 – Research Network for Interdisciplinary Studies of Transhistorical Deliberative Democracy (CHANGECODE, 2023-2027).
She participated in the educational project More than Houses (FAUP, 2023/2024), to celebrate 50 years of democracy, with a guiding text on migrations for architecture and art students. She was deputy coordinator of the Monitoring Committee of the Participatory Budget of UAlg (2024). She has been a member of the Inter-thematic Migration Group (ITM/CES/UC) since 2017 and of the National Housing Studies Network (Rede H) since 2020. She has collaborated with the Refugee Forum Portugal since 2019. She teaches Research Methodology and Artistic Production in the PhD program in Digital Media Art (DMAD/UAlg-UAb, 2023-). She is the driving force behind the Intersectional and Urban Studies Group, based at UAlg, in collaboration with other Portuguese and Spanish academics (from UAb, FAUP, ISCTE, CES, Loyola University, and University of Granada) (2023-).
Research Interests
Current interests intersect the right to the city and access to housing for the most vulnerable, with migration and media arts, from the lens of the production of the space/space produced.
