13th Doctoral Retreat in Digital Media Art featured in a report by Universidade Aberta
From 13 to 17 July 2026, Universidade Aberta (UAb), in Lisbon, hosted the 13th edition of the Doctoral Retreat in Digital Media Art, bringing together students, lecturers and researchers for a week dedicated to sharing, creating and discussing research in the field.
The retreat provided a space for dialogue and reflection on ongoing research in Digital Media Art, bringing together doctoral students, academic staff and researchers.
Organised by the University of Algarve (UAlg) and Universidade Aberta (UAb), with the support of CIAC – Research Centre in Arts and Communication, the programme included student project presentations and seminars with invited speakers. The event highlighted the links between academic research, artistic practice and knowledge sharing in the field of Digital Media Art.
Generative artificial intelligence was among the topics explored during the retreat. One of the seminars featured researcher Regilene Sarzi-Ribeiro, from São Paulo State University (UNESP), and focused on the importance of artificial intelligence literacy in digital art, as well as on some of the field’s contemporary trends.
The programme also included discussions on different approaches and trends in Digital Media Art, addressing topics such as ecology, technology, nature and the relationship between humans and machines.
Mirian Tavares, Director of the doctoral programme, and Pedro Alves da Veiga, Deputy Director, highlighted the growing interest in the programme in recent years, as well as its restructuring in response to developments in the field.
