Ana Isabel Soares Publishes Article on the Opening of Museu Zer0

Ana Isabel Soares, CIAC researcher, has published an article in Umbigo magazine about the opening of Museu Zer0, which took place on 27 September 2025.

Dedicated to digital art, Museu Zer0 has recently opened its doors in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, Tavira, following an eight-year rehabilitation of the former local Agricultural Cooperative building — a remarkable example of modernist architecture by Manuel Gomes da Costa. Conceived by Paulo Teixeira Pinto, the project aims to preserve industrial heritage while transforming it into a dynamic centre for artistic creation and experimentation.

Before its inauguration, the museum operated without a physical venue, organising exhibitions, debates, and training activities across the Algarve, while building partnerships with institutions such as the University of Algarve, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and Ars Electronica in Linz.

Curated by Fátima Marques Pereira, the opening was designed as a kind of “Renaissance workshop”, where artistic practice and research intersect. The artist residencies, along with spaces such as the FabLab, immersive room, and sound studio, reinforce the concept of a “living workshop”, focused on digital experimentation and connection to the local territory.

The inaugural programme includes installations and performances by artists such as Luís Fernandes, Maotik + Mina Mohseni, and Francisca Rocha Gonçalves, among others. Visitors can also explore 3D projections dedicated to architect Manuel Gomes da Costa and technological experiences that reconstruct the history of the former silos.

Presided over by João Correia Vargues, Museu Zer0 establishes itself as a landmark in the Portuguese contemporary art scene, bringing together technological innovation, industrial memory, and artistic creation.
