Aniki journal publishes new issue featuring a review by Ana Isabel Soares

The new issue of Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image, Volume 12, Issue 2 (July 2025), has just been published, featuring the thematic dossier “Methodological and Conceptual Challenges in Cinematic Artistic Practice-Based Research.”

The dossier is edited by Paula Albuquerque (Universidade Nova de Lisboa / Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam) and Francisco Paiva (Universidade da Beira Interior / iA* – Research Unit in Arts), and includes contributions from researchers of various nationalities who explore cinematic artistic practice as a form of research.

A review by a CIAC researcher stands out in the criticism section.

In this issue, the review “Dialogical Mirror”, written by Ana Isabel Soares, Associate Professor at the University of Algarve and researcher at CIAC, stands out. The text analyses the book Espelho Mágico: Uma história do cinema, by Francisco Valente, a deeply personal and critical reflection on cinema and the experience of spectatorship.

The review articulates themes such as film history, film criticism, and aesthetic experience, proposing a dialogue between works and spectators. Ana Isabel Soares places Valente’s book within a reflective tradition of cinema, resonating with authors such as Stanley Cavell, Rosa Maria Martelo, and the editors of O Cinema das Palavras.
