António Costa Valente publishes text in the book “The Colours of April”

The book “The Colours of April” celebrates the memory of the Carnation Revolution, with a text by CIAC researcher António Costa Valente.

On December 20th, the Helder Castanheira Auditorium at the University of Aveiro Bookshop hosted the release of the book “The Colours of April”. The book, published in two volumes, brings together texts organised and selected by academics Carlos Morais, Fernanda Cavacas, António Manuel Ferreira, Maria Fernanda Brasete and Rosa Lídia Coimbra. With a profound and multifaceted approach, the publication celebrates the memory of the Carnation Revolution and the transformative impact it had on Portuguese society.

Among the various chapters, António Costa Valente’s contribution, entitled “Filming at the point of a rifle: Cinema reborn after April”, stands out. This essay analyses how Portuguese cinema was renewed in the revolutionary context, exploring the narratives and languages that emerged in the days and period after 25 April 1974.

The work is based on a current and urgent reflection, as highlighted by the organisers: “In times of uncertainty and anaesthetising oblivion, such as today, celebrating April and the years of revolutionary euphoria is to contribute to preserving the memory of a historic moment that transformed our collective life, it is to contribute to ‘not letting the flower’ wilt, transformed into a symbol of freedom in Portugal.’

The launch was marked by an atmosphere of reflection and celebration, bringing together authors, academics and those interested in preserving historical memory. With this book, the organisers hope not only to pay homage to the past, but also to inspire the future, reinforcing the importance of the values of freedom and social transformation brought about by the Carnation Revolution.

“The Colours of April” is available to the public and promises to be an essential reference for anyone wishing to understand the richness and challenges of the Portuguese revolutionary period.
