Arquivos (in)visíveis: exhibition brings together Manuel Baptista’s works and memories
On 30 July 2026, at 6:00 p.m., the exhibition Arquivos (in)visíveis will open at the Galeria Municipal Trem – Manuel Baptista, in Faro. On display until 30 September 2026, the exhibition brings together works by the artist after whom the gallery is named.
The selection presented is drawn from a collection of works that remained stored for years in Manuel Baptista’s studio. Among the materials documenting his creative process are works from the 1960s that provide an insight into some of the images, memories and references that have shaped his artistic career.
Among the works on display is a sculpture related to the “novelos”, preserved in his notebooks through drawings and recollections of his childhood in the Algarve. For decades, they remained within this universe until acquiring a physical dimension, taking shape as sculptures presented in 2011 in the exhibition Fora de Escala, at the Museu da Eletricidade/Fundação EDP.
The works presented highlight the enduring presence of certain images and ideas throughout Manuel Baptista’s artistic career, which have been revisited and transformed over time. Between works on paper and sculptures, the exhibition brings together elements that have traversed different periods of his artistic production and acquired new forms and dimensions.
Arquivos (in)visíveis reveals a particular relationship between memory and creation: what remains stored does not necessarily disappear, but may continue to transform and take on new forms. Through drawings that have endured for decades and images that have moved from paper into space, the exhibition brings the public closer to an artistic universe built, in part, from what Manuel Baptista has preserved, revisited and transformed over time.
The exhibition is promoted by the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) of the University of Algarve, the Centre for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the support of the Faro Municipal Museum and the Galeria Municipal Trem – Manuel Baptista.
