Call for papers for the Colloquium “Landscape, Representation, Perception and Identity” extended until May 15

CIAC, in partnership with the Galician Studies Centres at the University of Algarve and the University of Minho, is organising the International Colloquium Landscape, Representation, Perception and Identity, to be held on September 10 and 11, 2026. This conference aims to bring together contributions that examine landscape not merely as a setting or narrative backdrop, but as a visual and symbolic construct, an expression of identity and presence, and a mediating device between the visible, the represented, and the imagined.

This call for papers invites researchers, artists, curators, and students to submit proposals for presentations that critically explore landscape as an aesthetic, cultural, and political category in cinema.

The deadline for abstract submissions has been extended until May 15, 2026. Proposals addressing, among others, the following topics will be particularly welcomed:

  • Landscape as an artistic genre and its influence on cinema and the arts;
  • Cinematic modernity and the historical configuration of the gaze;
  • Urban and rural landscapes: transformations of territory and new ways of inhabiting space;
  • Audiovisual media, landscape, memory, and cultural identity;
  • Landscape as a language and mechanism of artistic communication;
  • Processes of perception, representation, and construction of landscape in cinema and other arts;
  • Ecocritical approaches: landscape, ecology, and environmental issues in cinema and other arts;
  • Relationships between landscape and architecture in cinema;
  • Audiovisual media, landscape, and tourism: the circulation of images, territories, and imaginaries;
  • The relationship between landscape, sound, and music in audiovisual media.

Proposals may be submitted in Portuguese, Galician, English, French, and Spanish.

Important dates:

  • Abstract submission deadline: February 16 – May 15, 2026
  • Notification of acceptance: by June 15, 2026
  • Colloquium dates: September 10–11, 2026
  • Full paper submission deadline: October 10, 2026
  • Publication: December 2026

Interested participants should submit an abstract (200–300 words) along with a brief biographical note (up to 150 words). Further information and the submission form are available on the official website of the International Colloquium Landscape, Representation, Perception and Identity.
