CIAC co-organises celebration of the 70th anniversary of Grande Sertão: Veredas
The celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of Grande Sertão: Veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa, began on 7 September 2026 and continued until 11 September, with events taking place in Montemor-o-Novo, Lisbon and Loulé under the theme “Literature, territory and literary tourism: storytelling, discussion and reflection”.
The programme brought together oral storytelling, presentations and discussions centred on the work of Guimarães Rosa, with the participation of Dôra Guimarães and Tiago Goulart, from the Museu Casa Guimarães Rosa, in Minas Gerais, and Diomira Faria, a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a CIAC collaborator within the Lit&Tour Research Group.
The first activity, held in Montemor-o-Novo, brought together readers and researchers at the Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Faria. The session included a presentation of the Sertão Mundo exhibition by Diomira Faria, as well as an oral storytelling session featuring the work of Guimarães Rosa, led by Dôra Guimarães and Tiago Goulart.
In Lisbon, on 9 September, the Fundação José Saramago hosted an oral storytelling session featuring texts by Guimarães Rosa and José Saramago, held at the Memorial do Convento, with Dôra Guimarães and Tiago Goulart.
In the Algarve, the celebration took place on 11 September at the Polo Casimiro de Brito, part of the Biblioteca Municipal de Loulé, in Almancil. The programme included a presentation of the Sertão Mundo exhibition by Diomira Faria, an oral storytelling session featuring the work of Guimarães Rosa, led by Dôra Guimarães and Tiago Goulart, and the roundtable discussion “The sertão is everywhere: literary tourism and territorial development, from Cordisburgo to the Algarve”.
The roundtable was moderated by members of CIAC/Lit&Tour, fostering a dialogue between Cordisburgo and the Algarve through the work of Guimarães Rosa and exploring the possibilities of bringing literature and tourism together.
The session in Loulé brought the 70th-anniversary celebrations of Grande Sertão: Veredas to a close, bringing the two territories closer together through the work of Guimarães Rosa.
