CIAC joins the round table “Modernism and Regionalism” and the exhibition dedicated to José Dias Sancho
The Research Centre in Arts and Communication (CIAC) and the University of Algarve are institutional partners of the exhibition dedicated to José Dias Sancho, on display at the Municipal Museum of Faro until 16 February 2026. The exhibition is part of a curatorial project focused on the artistic and cultural Modernism of the Algarve in the first decades of the 20th century.
On 7 February, at 3:00 pm, the Municipal Museum of Faro will host the round table “Modernism and Regionalism”, an initiative that proposes debate and reflection on the multifaceted and controversial figure of José Dias Sancho, as well as on the artistic and cultural context of the Algarve in the early 20th century and on the exhibition-making process itself.
The round table will feature Raquel Henriques da Silva, Fernando Rosa Dias, Vasco Rosa, Sílvia Quinteiro, and Joana Galrão, and will be moderated by Marco Lopes. Among the participants, CIAC researcher Sílvia Quinteiro, coordinator of the Literature and Tourism Working Group, is one of the scholars responsible for deepening the study of José Dias Sancho’s literary work. The initiative also includes a guided tour of the exhibition led by the curator Fernando Rosa Dias.
Born in São Brás de Alportel, José Dias Sancho established himself as a central figure of Algarvian Modernism, developing his activity between his hometown, Faro, Olhão, and Lisbon. A caricaturist, journalist, art critic, writer, and filmmaker, he was an active cultural agent and a keen polemicist, simultaneously advocating Regionalism and the assertion of artistic modernity in the Algarve. The exhibition offers an integrated reading of these multiple facets, outlining an artistic and cultural biography marked by strong ties to the country’s major cultural centres.
Scientifically curated by Fernando Rosa Dias (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon) and with executive curation by Joana Galrão, who holds a Master’s degree in Curatorship from the same institution, the exhibition brings together a unique set of works from private collectors, galleries, and public institutions, many of which are being shown for the first time in Faro and in the Algarve. Highlights include unpublished caricatures of Algarvian figures, rarely exhibited works by artists such as Carlos Porfírio, Raul Carneiro, Eduardo Viana, Mário Eloy, Jorge Barradas, and António Ferro, as well as artistic dialogues that reveal affinities between José Dias Sancho and the Algarvian and national cultural landscape.
The author’s literary work occupies a central place in the exhibition, benefiting from the research carried out by Sílvia Quinteiro and Maria José Marques, within the framework of a partnership between the University of Algarve and the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, alongside the valorisation of his artistic production and his connections to theatre and cinema.
After its presentation at the Municipal Museum of Faro, the exhibition project will travel to the Museu Bordalo Pinheiro, in Lisbon, concluding its tour at the Museu do Trajo, in São Brás de Alportel, the birthplace of José Dias Sancho.
