CIAC organises talk series on the “Construction of the Common” based on the exhibition “Chão Comum: Terraphilia”
CIAC – Research Centre for Arts and Communication – is organising, on April 18 and 24, 2026, a series of talks titled “Conversations around the ‘Construction’ of the Common,” as part of the programme of the exhibition “Chão Comum: Terraphilia” by artist Susana de Medeiros, on display at the Municipal Gallery Trem – Manuel Baptista, in Faro, until April 26.
The first session will take place on April 18 (Saturday) at 5:00 p.m. at the Municipal Museum of Faro. Building on the questions raised by Susana de Medeiros — which examine how we construct a “common ground” and how we can re-establish meaningful relationships with territory in a context of globalisation — the invited speakers will reflect on the relationship between space, community, and the contemporary imaginary.
This session will feature Miguel Reimão Costa and Pedro Prista. Miguel Reimão Costa is a professor at the University of Algarve, holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Porto, and is a researcher at the Centre for Studies in Archaeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences (CEAACP), where he develops research on architecture in Iberian and Mediterranean contexts. Pedro Prista is an anthropologist with a PhD from Iscte, an associate researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, whose work focuses on themes such as emigration, tourism, social change, and cultural projects related to heritage and artistic creation.
The second session will take place on April 24 (Friday) at 5:00 p.m. at the Municipal Gallery Trem – Manuel Baptista, bringing together three CIAC researchers: Mirian Tavares, Ana Isabel Soares, and Susana de Medeiros.
Mirian Tavares, vice-coordinator of CIAC, is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve and has played a key role in consolidating research and education in the Arts at the institution, articulating practices of creation, research, and territory.
Ana Isabel Soares, a CIAC researcher, is an Associate Professor at the University of Algarve, holds a PhD in Literary Theory, and conducts research focused on the relationships between cinema and literature.
Susana de Medeiros, also a CIAC researcher, is a visual artist, professor, and curator whose practice operates at the intersection of drawing, installation, and collaborative practices, exploring the relationships between visual arts, anthropology, and ecology.
The series proposes a space for interdisciplinary reflection on the concept of the “common,” bringing together perspectives from architecture, anthropology, literature, and the visual arts, and reinforcing the role of artistic creation in shaping new imaginaries and reconfiguring relationships with territory.
