CIAC Researcher Joins European COST CHANGECODE Network and Presents Research at the University of Wroclaw
CIAC researcher Sílvia Leiria Viegas is a member of Working Group 2 (WG2) of COST Action CA22149 – Research Network for Interdisciplinary Studies of Transhistorical Deliberative Democracy (CHANGECODE), a European network dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of deliberative democratic processes.
Within the scope of this participation, the researcher attended the joint WG1 and WG2 meeting held on 8 and 9 September 2025 at the Department of Political and Administrative Systems of the Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Wroclaw, Poland. The event brought together researchers from several European countries for an exchange aimed at advancing scientific knowledge.
During the meeting, Sílvia Viegas presented part of her ongoing research developed at CIAC, entitled “Refugee Research for (Post)Covid-19. National Measures and Local Actions in the Algarve: A Digital Tour for Access to Adequate Housing and Living Conditions.” The presentation contributed to debates on the factors influencing the creation of deliberative frameworks and on contemporary deliberation tools, with particular attention to the role of digital media, social mobilisations, and urban and digital dynamics in decision-making processes.
The COST Action CHANGECODE, funded by European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), aims to establish an international research network dedicated to the study of deliberative democracy from a transhistorical and comparative perspective. The action promotes collaboration among researchers from different scientific fields, exploring cultural, social, legal, and media-related dimensions of deliberation, ranging from historical forms of participation to current digital contexts and so-called mini-publics.
The meeting held in Wroclaw focused particularly on analysing the mechanisms, content, and tools of deliberation, as well as the impact of contemporary social and ideological transformations on democratic processes, strengthening interdisciplinary dialogue and international scientific cooperation. The participation of the CIAC researcher in this European forum contributes to the international visibility of the research developed at the centre and to the consolidation of collaborative networks in the fields of communication, culture, and deliberative democracy.
