CIAC supports the Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship Conversation Series
The Intersecting and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE organizes and invites you to participate in the Conversation Cycle: Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship (2024-2025). The first of six conversations will take place on May 27th at 4:00 PM (GMT +1), focusing on the theme of Art, Memory, and Forgetting.
As special guests, the meeting will feature Maria Manuela Restivo (IS-UP) and Angel Del Río Sánchez (UPO). The moderation will be conducted by Isabel Carvalho, a researcher at CIAC-UAb. The Group and the Conversation Cycle will be presented by Sílvia Leiria Viegas, a researcher at CIAC-UAlg.
The Intersecting and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE is an interdisciplinary space for academic collaboration among researchers from various Portuguese and Spanish universities, aimed at analyzing and transforming urban areas through the lens of intersectionality. It aims to work with and on social groups in situations of vulnerability in both countries, towards the co-construction of a society that is less unequal and more just.
The Conversation Cycle aims to reflect on these themes in the year when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the April 25th Revolution in Portugal and the end of the dictatorship. The conversations will take place between 2024 and 2025, the year that also marks the end of the dictatorship in Spain. Thus, starting from memory studies, we aim to project a future by discussing central issues in the construction of contemporary society, its challenges, and opportunities. We want, through a cross-cutting vision, to explore collective readings, whether convergent or divergent, on Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship in the Iberian Peninsula in the 21st century.
Conversation 1 – Art, Memory, and Forgetting inaugurates this Conversation Cycle, focusing, on one hand, on memories of dictatorship, repression, and their invisibilities, and on the other hand, on the gradual construction of vernacular artistic practices and heritage understood from a historical perspective. In this cross-cutting vision, we aim to rethink Freedom, Democracy, and Citizenship through readings on silence and marginalization.
