International Colloquium Landscape, Representation, Perception and Identity: call for abstracts open until April 20

The CIAC, in partnership with the Galician Studies Centers of UAlg and UMinho, is organizing the International Colloquium on Landscape, Representation, Perception and Identity, to be held on September 10–11, 2026. This conference aims to bring together contributions that analyze the landscape not only as a setting or narrative backdrop, but as a visual and symbolic construction—an expression of identity and presence—and as a mediating device between the visible, the represented, and the imagined.

This call for papers invites researchers, artists, curators, and students to submit proposals that critically explore the landscape as an aesthetic, cultural, and political category in cinema.

Abstract submissions are open from February 16 to April 20, 2026. Proposals addressing, among others, the following themes are particularly encouraged:

  • Landscape as an artistic genre and its influence on cinema and the arts;
  • Cinematic modernity and the historical configuration of the gaze;
  • Urban and rural landscape: transformations of the territory and new ways of inhabiting space;
  • Audiovisual media, landscape, memory, and cultural identity;
  • Landscape as a language and mechanism of artistic communication;
  • Processes of perception, representation, and construction of landscape in cinema and other arts;
  • Ecocritical approaches: landscape, ecology, and environmental issues in cinema and other arts;
  • Relationships between landscape and architecture in cinema;
  • Audiovisual media, landscape and tourism: circulation of images, territories and imaginaries;
  • The relationship between landscape, sound, and music in audiovisual media.

Proposals may be submitted in Portuguese, Galician, English, French, or Spanish.

Important Dates

  • Abstract submission: February 16 – April 20, 2026
  • Notification of acceptance: by June 15, 2026
  • Conference dates: September 10–11, 2026
  • Full paper submission: October 10, 2026
  • Publication: December 2026

Interested participants should submit an abstract (200–300 words) and a short biographical note (up to 150 words).
