Communication about climate changes will be the subject of the Communication Sciences Seminar
Rogelio Fernández Reyes, professor at the Faculty of Communication of the University of Seville, will give a lecture titled “The challenge of communicating climate change” at the upcoming Communication Sciences Seminar. The event will take place on 30 April 2026, at 2:30 pm, in Amphitheatre 0.5 of the Pedagogical Complex on the Penha campus.
Climate change is considered one of the main challenges facing humanity. This raises the question: how is this topic addressed quantitatively? And qualitatively? To analyse the evolution of climate change coverage, the professor uses as a reference the Media and Climate Change Observatory of the University of Colorado.
For the qualitative analysis, the starting point is the conviction that climate change represents a shared challenge that requires a collective response. It is therefore necessary to involve all sectors of society. If the goal is to reach different types of audiences in order to promote climate action, communication must consider their values. Thus, the lecture will discuss how to communicate climate change while taking into account the specific characteristics of each audience.
This seminar, co-organised by CIAC professors and researchers Ana Filipa Martins and Bruno Mendes da Silva, within the curricular unit of History of the Media of the 1st year of the Communication Sciences degree, is open to the community. The event is supported by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under the project «UID/04019/2025 – CIAC» DOI: 10.54499/UID/04019/2025.
