Cycle of Conversations Freedom, Democracy and Citizenship: Power, Resistance and Participation

The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE is organising the Cycle of Talks Freedom, Democracy and Citizenship (2024-2025). The fourth of six talks will take place on January 21st, at 4 pm (GMT +0), on the theme of “Power, Resistance and Participation”. Special guests will be Tiago Oliveira (general secretary of the CGTP) and Pastora Filigrana (lawyer and human rights defender). The moderator will be Rocío López Montero (Universidad Loyola Andalucía). Francesca Vita (DINÂMIA-ISCTE,IUL) will present the group and the series of talks.

The Intersectional and Urban Studies Group – RE|DE is an interdisciplinary space for academic collaboration between researchers from various Portuguese and Spanish universities, aimed at analysing and transforming the urban through the lens of intersectionality. It aims to work on and with social groups in situations of vulnerability, in both countries, and around the co-construction of a less unequal and fairer society.

The Cycle of Conversations aims to reflect on these themes in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of 25 April in Portugal and the end of the dictatorship. The talks will take place between 2024 and 2025, the same year in which is celebrated 50 years of the end of the dictatorship in Spain. In this way, it starts from the studies of memory to project a future by debating issues that are central to the construction of contemporary society, its challenges and opportunities. Through a cross-sectional approach, it explores convergent or divergent readings of Freedom, Democracy and Citizenship in the Iberian Peninsula in the 21st century.

Talk 4 – Power, Resistance and Participation continues this series of talks by focusing, on the one hand, on the evolution of participatory democracy in both countries in recent years and the associated political narratives and, on the other hand, on the achievements and setbacks in access to human and urban rights resulting from social mobilisations. The aim of this cross-view is to rethink freedom, democracy and citizenship through readings on forms of popular representation based on paradigmatic experiences of organised civil society.
