Elizângela Pinheiro publishes article: ‘The search for the auto genre in Portugal and the process of consolidation of the Nation’

Elizângela Gonçalves Pinheiro, a researcher at CIAC, has published an article: ‘The search for the auto genre in Portugal and the process of consolidating the Nation’, in the Dossier: Italo-Luso-Afro-Brazilian Crossings: for an urgent ethical restitution of Humanism (languages and literatures today) (Federal University of Goiás).

A summary of the article: ‘The Iberian heritage of the autos demonstrates an act of humanism in Portuguese literature. Theatre theory has already classified autos as one-act plays, and this is where my contribution lies. The aim is to show how the autos crossed centuries and went to the former colonies as instruments of conquest, to humanise the people of the new continents. The bibliographical review covers definitions in dictionaries, moving on to authors such as Carolina Michaelis, Pimpão, Teófilo Braga, Augusto Cardoso Bernardes and José Camões.’

Elizângela Pinheiro has a PhD in Literary, Cultural and Interartistic Studies from the University of Porto.
