ESEC-UAlg celebrates the 30th anniversary of Communication Sciences

Thirty years after opening its doors to the first Communication Sciences students, the Superior School of Education and Communication of the University of Algarve (ESEC-UAlg) will bring together former students, professionals, and researchers on 14 and 15 May to celebrate a long-standing educational journey in the field of communication.

The celebrations begin on Thursday with the unveiling of the plaque for the Vítor Reia Baptista Studio, in Room 31 of ESEC, paying tribute to the late founding professor of the programme, Vítor Reia Baptista, as well as the opening of an exhibition featuring works produced by students within the scope of various curricular units.

The afternoon programme continues with a cinema session entitled “Celebrating Cinema: The Porto School in the 30 Years of Communication Sciences”, featuring Sério Fernandes and Nuno Malheiro, followed by a roundtable discussion on “Strategic Communication in the Algarve”, bringing together entrepreneurs Marta Aragão, Pedro Águas, and Ricardo Pedro. At 5:30pm, the commemorative documentary marking the programme’s 30th anniversary will be presented at the Paulo Freire Amphitheatre at ESEC.

On Friday, the focus shifts to the professional trajectories of former UAlg Communication Sciences students. A roundtable will bring together alumni working both in the Algarve and beyond the region to reflect on the relationship between academic training and professional practice. In the afternoon, journalist Francisco Sena Santos will address the current challenges surrounding journalism education and professional practice. The celebrations will conclude with a dinner at the Hotel Eva Senses in Faro.

The first academic year of what was then the undergraduate Communication Sciences programme at the University of Algarve began in the 1995–96 academic year, with Vítor Reia Baptista serving as its first director. These two days of celebrations are part of a broader set of sessions and initiatives that have been taking place throughout the academic year and will continue until the end of 2026.
