“How to Apply Media Literacy in Viable Projects Across Different Areas and Social Contexts” Will Be the Theme of the Next Communication Sciences Seminar

On Wednesday, October 8, the next Communication Sciences Seminar will take place. Entitled “How to Apply Media Literacy in Viable Projects Across Different Areas and Social Contexts”, the theme will be presented by Journalism researcher at the University of Málaga, Trinidad Fortes Matínez, who is currently undertaking a research stay at CIAC as part of her PhD.

The seminar focuses on media literacy as an urgent need in today’s society. It will address the importance of promoting critical thinking, fact-checking, and the development of digital skills that enable citizens to act consciously and responsibly in media environments.

Unlike a purely theoretical approach, the presentation will showcase concrete projects that apply media literacy in different contexts, from school settings to community spaces. In addition, online resources and practical tools will be shared to help teachers, researchers, and communication professionals create real proposals adapted to their own contexts.

The event will take place at Amphitheater 67 of ESEC, on the Penha campus of the University of Algarve, at 10:00 a.m., with free admission.

This seminar is supported by national funds through the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., under the project “UID/04019/2025 – CIAC,” and promoted within the scope of the Media Literacy course unit of the 3rd year of the Communication Sciences undergraduate program.

The Communication Sciences Seminar Series is an initiative that has been developed in recent years, in collaboration with professionals and the community. The sessions are promoted by researchers from the CIAC Research Group on Communication Sciences, who are also professors in the undergraduate program in Communication Sciences and the Master’s in Digital Media Communication at ESEC-UAlg.
