Hugo Paquete presented a paper at the Explorations on Sound and New Media Art Conference
CIAC researcher Hugo Paquete presented the paper “Maximum Sound, Meta-Opera: Human-Machine Co-Agency and Post-Techno Aesthetics in the Age of AI” at the international edition of the Explorations on Sound and New Media Art Conference, themed “Urgencies.”
The event, organized by the CITAR Research Center, took place from November 5 to 7, 2025, at the Auditório Ilídio Pinho in Porto.
The presentation was part of Panel Sessions 4 on November 6, chaired by André Baltazar. The paper explored the intersection of algorithmic composition, artificial intelligence, and contemporary music aesthetics, developing the concept of the “meta-opera” as a space of co-agency between human and machine. Drawing on a post-techno sensibility, the presentation interrogated new forms of sonic creation and the political dimensions embedded within automated systems.
This edition of the conference brought together leading artists and thinkers to reflect on pressing global issues — from environmental crises to geopolitical conflicts — through sound and contemporary media art practices. Hugo Paquete was part of a program that featured keynote speakers such as Steve Goodman (Kode9), Aura Satz, and Abbas Zahedi, whose work in sonic warfare, preemptive listening, and ecological grief resonated with the central themes of the event.
The “Urgencies” edition positioned listening as a critical form of attention and a means of engaging with contemporary challenges. In this context, the presentation contributed to the debate by examining how human–machine collaboration in the arts can both reflect and critically question our technologically mediated reality.
