Launch of the book “Counterspeech: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Countering Dangerous Speech”

Susana Costa, a researcher from CIAC, will be present at the launch of the book Counterspeech: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Countering Dangerous Speech, scheduled for February 29, at 5:00 PM, in a hybrid format.

The chapter “Online Hate Speech in Video Games Communities: A Counter Project” will be presented by the researcher and represents a valuable contribution to the book, developed in collaboration with Bruno Mendes da Silva and Mirian Tavares, also researchers from CIAC.

The first edition of the publication Counterspeech – Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Countering Dangerous Speech analyzes the forms and functions of counterspeech, as well as what determines its effectiveness and success from multidisciplinary perspectives. Counter-narratives are in line with international human rights and freedom of expression, and can be a much more powerful tool against dangerous discourses. It is often seen as a more democratic alternative compared to measures such as censorship or blocking.
