Manuel Célio Conceição is editor of the European Journal of Language Policy

Manuel Célio Conceição, researcher at CIAC, is the editor of the new issue of the European Journal of Language Policy, published by Liverpool Univeristy Press.

This issue includes three articles offering diverse perspectives on language policy and its impact on different regions and institutions. Each contribution offers a deep dive into the specific linguistic and political challenges of the respective context.

The first article, by Frances Junnier — “English as a lingua franca discourse in European Union higher education and research policy” — explores the prominence of English in Europe. Using critical discourse analysis to study a corpus of European documents, the author analyses the implications of English as a contact language in education and research contexts, serving (or not) as a transitional language in the midst of the continent’s linguistic diversity.

The second article, by Aman Abasilov and Bijomart Kapalbek — “Linguistic dynamics and language policy in Kazakhstan: challenges and future prospects” — examines the intricate linguistic dynamics in Kazakhstan, giving an idea of the linguistic changes during the independence period and evaluating language policy and its prospects in the current phase, in order to show the different phases of the formation of Kazakh linguistic identity. The study provides an overview of how Kazakhstan manages its bilingual and multilingual realities, reflecting on the wider implications for national identity and cultural preservation in a post-Soviet landscape.

‘‘I don’t speak correctly’: linguistic attitudes of Galician speakers in Costa da Morte”, by Ewa Urbaniak, is the third text, which analyses the linguistic realities of a unique region in Spain. This article examines the socio-cultural context of the Galician language, describing the negative attitudes towards the non-standardised version of Galician. It explores how these attitudes are shaped by the emergence of a prestigious standardised version of the language, rather than by the influence of Spanish.

The issue also features three essays. Among them, “Languages and language policies within European university alliances”, by Manuel Célio Conceição.

The journal is open access and can be found (here).
