Sílvia Viegas contributes to national publication on housing and architecture
CIAC researcher Sílvia Viegas took part in the recent publication Mais do que Casas (More than Houses), an editorial project that brings together contributions from several higher education institutions about architecture and the current housing crisis.
The book results from the programme “Mais do que Casas”, promoted by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) within the framework of the Commemorations of the 50th anniversary of 25 April, and is co-published with MUDE – the Design Museum, which also hosted the exhibition associated with the initiative. Over two years, the project involved 25 higher education institutions, mobilising a broad academic community of 1,750 students and 280 lecturers.
Sílvia Viegas highlights the importance of the publication for placing the discipline of architecture within the context of housing and the housing crisis, bringing together several universities around this theme. The researcher is the author of one of the texts that make up the seven guiding perspectives that open the publication, representing CIAC in this collective project, which also includes the University of the Algarve through its Landscape Architecture programme.
The launch of Mais do que Casas took place as a cycle of events across three cities. The first presentation was held in Lisbon, at the auditorium of MUDE – the Design Museum, on 7 November 2025. This was followed by Porto, with a session at the Fernando Távora auditorium at FAUP on 12 November, and the closing event took place in Coimbra, at the former Chapel of the College of Arts, on 20 November.
Sílvia Viegas’s participation in this publication reinforces CIAC’s contribution to critical reflection on the contemporary challenges of housing, underlining the role of academic research in building interdisciplinary and socially engaged responses for the future of cities.
