Valdemir Santos Neto publishes book on Memory literacy in digital culture
Researcher Valdemir Santos Neto published the book Literacia da memória: práticas e competências mnemônicas na cultura digital (Memory literacy: Mnemonic practices and competencies in digital culture) in October 2026, through the Brazilian publishing house Editora Sulina. The publication is based on his doctoral thesis in Language Sciences, developed at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Brazil), which included a research period at CIAC – Research Centre for Arts and Communication, as a visiting researcher at the University of Algarve, under the supervision of Professor Gabriela Borges.
The book explores the influence of social media and audiovisual productions on the construction of collective memory, examining how representations of the past are produced, shared, and reinterpreted within digital culture.
Drawing on the television series The Crown and fan-created TikTok videos about Princess Diana, the author introduces the concept of Memory literacy and presents an analytical model of the competencies required to interpret and critically reflect on representations of the past in digital environments.
The publication features a preface by Gabriela Borges, from the University of Algarve, and a prologue by Ignacio Aguaded and Camino López-García, researchers affiliated with Spanish universities.
Valdemir Santos Neto is currently further developing the concept of Memory literacy within the framework of his PhD in Digital Media Art, extending his research into migration studies. His ongoing work explores the relationships between collective memory, migration experiences, and media literacy.
