“The Constellation of Consciousness”
A project proposed by Studio Rudolfo Quintas, with the support and partnership of CIAC, including several galleries, artists and researchers working in the field of digital arts, “The Constellation Of Consciousness” is a new media project that calls for participatory art, involving the public in the process of creating a work from the online digital space. The artistic research is about collective consciousness and will produce a set of works developed on various occasions and in various formats such as online, digital installation and physical pieces, supported by technologies such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Information Visualization.
The project aims to investigate new forms of perception, understanding and democratic participation of the collective conscience, focusing on art as a function of construction, visualization and experience of this phenomenon. How can we create a more human relationship between the digital space of online culture and the space of physical experience? Can consciousness be a universal phenomenon and exist in an artificial intelligence art object? These are the two key questions of this project.
“The Constellation Of Consciousness” develops along 5 axes of programming and public presentations. Each of these activities has different artistic objectives and target audiences with the aim of making knowledge and created art more inclusive in society. Throughout these five activities, the artistic proposals created during the project are presented: a website, an audiovisual digital installation, a physical sculpture-installation, an artist’s book, and a series of small physical pieces.
“DARKLESS: An Encounter with Nature”
This project, the highest ranked by the jury in the Arte Sem Limites competition run by the Directorate-General for the Arts – Ministry of Culture, proposes the conception, execution and presentation of a new sound performance that investigates the relationship between the body’s expression and nature through sound. The project will be carried out through 6 artistic residencies and an impact study at Retina Portugal (ARP), in partnership with the Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Portugal (ACAPO) and the Association for the Promotion of Education of the Blind (APEC). The project also includes a public presentation of the performance at Lisboa Soa and a conference promoted by CIAC to discuss the social impact of the relationship between Art, Science and Technology in the context of visually impaired people.
“DARKLESS: An Encounter with Nature” seeks to develop activities that promote better body proprioception and self-esteem, such as the participation of blind artists in emerging projects related to artistic experimentation and innovation, particularly in the field of new media.
These were the questions that motivated the birth of the “DARKLESS” project in 2016, created in close collaboration with blind and low-vision people by artist-researcher Rudolfo Quintas. During the creative process of this New Media project, a new “hyper-instrument” was developed that translates the movement and gestures of blind people’s bodies into sound using a 3D sensor. The project led to the creation of a sound performance of bodily expression entitled “Darkless: the Black Hole” performed by blind people. In this new phase, the project seeks to qualitatively raise its artistic potential, proposing a new sound performance that investigates the relationship between body expression and nature through sound.
“Help me not to be afraid!”
A project developed by the Teatro Umano association, with the intervention of the Psycho-Social Support and Security Association, with the aim of enhancing artistic research and experimentation as innovative development and knowledge practices, focusing on continuity work and thus enriching the creative process carried out in collaboration between Art and Mental Health.
This project has the support and partnership of CIAC; Universtá Torino- Núcleo Teatro Sociale, Teatro da Garagem, Fundação José Saramago, Teatro O BANDO, Teatro Artimanha, Faz Filmes Produtora, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria and Projeto Social Agilidades.
“Help me not to be afraid” proposes the construction of an original play in which professional and non-professional artists participate. The aim is to build bridges between ‘worlds’ that don’t often cross paths or talk to each other, and at the same time to reduce stigma by putting mental illness on display in art venues (Teatro Taborda, Fundação José Saramago and Teatro Artimanha) for the general public. During the course of the project, artistic dynamics will be developed that allow critical thinking to be explored in the creative process as promoters of an inclusive community and addressing stereotypes in relation to mental health. It is a project that aims to intervene in mental health, through art to promote social inclusion and prevent the impact of mental illness among groups in situations of great vulnerability, who live in Bip/Zip, through an artistic and integrative approach.
“The manifestation of being”
The project, proposed by Studio Rudolfo Quintas as part of the “Support in Partnership – Art and Mental Health” call, proposes the creation of an interactive installation involving research and experimentation over the course of 4 artistic residencies with 12 depressive patients and their psychological assessment at the “Espaço d’arte” of ADEB (an association that supports depressive and bipolar patients). At the end, ADEB holds a press conference to publicly present the results of the project, MONO organizes an exhibition of the installation and CIAC holds a conference to publicly discuss and reflect on the project.
Previous experiences of creating multimedia installations developed by Studio Rudolfo Quintas have shown success in social inclusion and their therapeutic potential when designed for this purpose. One example is the “DARKLESS” sound installation created in close collaboration with blind and partially sighted people, which translates body movements and gestures into sound using a 3D sensor. The motivation for the “The manifestation of being” project is to extend this successful experience to the reality of mental health in partnership with ADEB.
