Also noteworthy was the co-organization of the II Congress of the National Network of Cultural Studies (RNEC), which brought together academics, researchers, and research centers, as well as Portuguese academic institutions dedicated to cultural studies/culture (April).

Furthermore, the organization of ARTECH 2023 – 11th International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts (conference and exhibition) under the theme “Digital Creation Processes” at the University of Algarve (November) is worth mentioning.

Additionally, the Center supported the publication of articles and the participation of its researchers in scientific events. For example, “VI Congress Literacy, Media & Citizenship” (April), “VII International Congress of Romance Studies” (May), “Digital Innovation: Spaces and Challenges for Higher Education” (May), “Linguistic Terminology and Grammatical Knowledge” (June), “V Congresso Nacional de Educação para a Saúde” (June), “Avanca|Cinema 2023” (July), “KUI 2023: Conference Culture and Computer Science 2023” (September), “Digicom – 7th International Conference on Design and Digital Communication” (November).

In 2023, CIAC, in collaboration with Romanceiro.pt, promoted the publication “Una tomba emblematica per una morta incoronata. Nuevas disquisiciones sobre Inés de Castro en el Romancero”, from the Opúsculos Collection, by Pere Ferré.

The “ROTURA – Journal of Communication, Culture, and Arts”, in 2023, published three issues: “Digital Media-Art” (1st semester), “New Narratives and Media Literacy: Strategies and Experiences for Cybercitizenship” (special issue), and “Mediterranean Cinemas” (2nd semester). The first gathers research articles focused on creative, methodological, and communication aspects in the areas of computational and generative art, interactive installations and transmedia narratives, virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, and all areas where digital media are manipulated through computing, aimed at artistic creation. The special issue featured articles related to themes of cyberspace, new narratives, media literacy, habits, consumption, and skills of digital society, usage, discourse, ethics, and values transmitted in social networks. The last one focused on a critical reflection on cinema, as an expression of the history, culture, and heritage of the Mediterranean. It is worth noting the growth of the journal with the attribution of various indexations in 2023, including Latindex and Scopus.

The Digital Literacy and Inclusion Research Hub of the Polytechnic of Santarém promoted some events in its field of activity. Additionally, it continued to participate in various national and international projects, including “AI2Learn – Artificial Intelligence to Learning”, the “Programa Operacional – Capital Humano”, co-financed by Portugal2020 and the European Social Fund, and the “Virtual Escape Room: Future Jobs Integration – Supporting Ukraine and Migrants”, financed by the Erasmus+ KA2 program.

This hub signed international cooperation protocols with the International Academic Network Association of Lusophony (RIAL), as well as with Higher Education Institutions (Constantin Brâncuși University – Romania, Goce Delcev University – North Macedonia, and Latvian Academy of Culture – Latvia) and Research Centers (Institute for Quality of Life Research Center – Romania) to further contribute to the international impact of this center.

At the Universidade Aberta Research Hub (CIAC-UAb), the organization of the KUI – Culture and Computer Science 2023 international conference (September) stands out, due to its particularly strong component of internationalization as well as institutional collaboration at the national level, since CIAC-UAb organized this conference in collaboration with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. Furthermore, the scientific production of the hub members at the level of indexed international publications (Scopus) was highlighted, both in scientific journals and in books and proceedings, while maintaining a high level of participation as scientific evaluators of international publications, participation in the editorial boards of international journals, membership in international and national scientific committees, and review of scientific articles in journals and conferences with scientific arbitration.

In 2023, the Lisbon Theatre and Film School Research Hub continued to reinforce its lines of research and applied creation in the field of Scenic Performativities and Moving Image (working group in Theater and Cinema). The activities developed focused on three fundamental aspects characterizing the hub, namely the production of critical bibliography on topics that cross literature and dramaturgy, performing arts and moving image; creation and/or dramaturgical assistance for theater shows and dynamization of laboratory in performing arts and/or scenic creation (conception, direction, and/or interpretation in theater/music/performance).

The Center sought, on one hand, to continue some projects already initiated in previous years with the central objective of developing applied research in the domains of arts (theater, literature, cinema, visual arts, digital arts) and communication, and on the other hand, to reinforce both the number of publications of its researchers and the synergies with elements of other hubs of CIAC.

In 2023, the strengthening of relations with local entities and the development of networks and partnerships continued. It is worth mentioning, for example, the support of CIAC in the curation/programming of the Trem Gallery (Faro) and the partnership with MuseuZer0, the Municipal Museum of Faro, the Open Studios initiative, the BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts, the Avanca Film Festival, the Rudolfo Quintas Studio, the Absonus Lab, and the Umano Theater.

In 2023, CIAC continued to favor artistic and scientific dissemination, developing projects, and inserting actions in the national and international fabric that promote the debate of ideas and the production of knowledge.

Internationally, the “Ciclo de Seminários Invitro” (May and June) was one of the activities carried out in 2023 as part of the “Invitro” project. This is an initiative in the field of digital arts and transdisciplinary thinking and practices, which seeks to welcome, promote, and empower artists, researchers, and audiences.

International partnerships continued to be nurtured, notably with the CIAC Talks initiative, which, through the Cultural Adventures project, established connections between Faro and Bangkok by recording a series of interviews with Thai and international artists associated with the School of Architecture and Design of the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (SoA+D). The interviews are available on our YouTube channel – CIACmedia.

Also, within the scope of the Cultural Adventures project, an official visit of the Center’s coordinators to the King Mongkut’s University of Technology was held with the aim of consolidating and extending the collaboration between the institutions. During this visit, CIAC researchers presented their research and artistic practice experiences at the “Practice & Research Seminar” (February).

It is worth mentioning the commitment to expanding CIAC’s network internationally through the pedagogical and scientific visit of researchers from the Center at Hue University, Vietnam (January).

In 2023, CIAC remained connected to the European Language Council, an association of universities, language centers, and professionals in the field of languages that serves as a platform for connecting with European bodies and other associations/alliances.

The participation of researchers in the Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) integrated CIAC into a network of work that resulted in the publication “Counterspeech – Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Countering Dangerous Speech.”

Regarding the organization of international events, CIAC joined forces with the Artech International Association and held ARTECH 2023 – 11th International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts, which took place at the University of Algarve (November) under the theme “Digital Creation Processes.” As part of this international conference, CIAC was responsible for editing the conference proceedings, which were divided into two volumes (short and long papers). Later, a version of the proceedings book was published in the ACM Digital Library, thus giving more international visibility to the presented works.

The CIAC-UAb hub also partnered with the INKA Research Group of the University of Applied Sciences of Berlin (HTW) and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon to promote KUI 2023 – XX International Conference on Culture and Computer Science (September).

The Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion Hub, within the European project PREDICT: Jobs of the Future, promoted a Series of Webinars (March, April, May) which included the following sessions: “Cybersecurity,” “Code of Conduct,” “Evaluation as an improvement agent: didactic intervention tools,” and several workshops on the theme “ChatGPT: Interactions.”

Through the established protocol with the Interdisciplinary Study Group: Humanities, Development (Federal University of Maranhão, Brazil), the lecture “A Mística Feminina Medieval entre Portugal e o Brasil” (October) was organized at the University of Algarve. On this occasion, both the lecture and the collaboration protocol were presented at RUAfm – University Radio of Algarve.

Finally, it is worth mentioning an enhancement of internationalization which resulted in the establishment of new partnerships and the integration of some researchers into international research networks. CIAC established a collaboration agreement for the creation of the “International Symposium of Information and Communication Research Laboratories,” along with other research centers, notably from Abdelmalek Essaâdi University (Morocco), “Dunărea de Jos” University of Galati (Romania), and the American University of Cairo (Egypt), with the aim of creating a symposium of laboratories to promote the exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and innovation in the field of information, communication, and related disciplines.

The Center continues to engage in other types of international projects, participating in the meeting of the RIAL Network – International Academic Network of Lisbon within the scope of the V Symposium on Economics and Management of the Lusophony (November), as well as in the MetaREDTIC meeting (September), associating with the European University Consortium of the Seas (SEA-EU) formed by nine European universities, aiming to strengthen the links between teaching, research, innovation, and knowledge transfer, funded by the European Commission (Erasmus +), and also collaborating on the project “iHERITAGE ICT Mediterranean platform for UNESCO cultural heritage,” which aims to improve and disseminate new technologies in cultural visits in Mediterranean areas, based on UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In 2023, CIAC was an academic partner of ICOAH 2023 – 10th International Conference on Arts and Humanities 2023, under the theme “Collaborative process, Cooperation, and Multiplicity,” the international conference IMPACT SCIENCE 2023 (October), and the IV Intercontinental Conference on Digital Transformation (December).

Some events stand out, which had the participation of researchers from the Center and contributed to the international dissemination of CIAC: “HERITAGES: Past and Present Built and Social”; “XI Jornadas Didácticas ELE Difusión” (March); “Animafest ScannerX 2023” (June); “EAI GOODTECHS 2023” and “EAI HEALTHYIoT 2023” (October); “ICCH 2023 – 7th International Conference on Culture and History” (July); “14th Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities”; “13th Congress of European Research in Mathematics Education”; “XXVI Encontro da Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos de Cinema e Audivisual” (November); “Artech 2023” (2023); “CISC’23 – International Colloquium on Communication Sciences” (November).

Through hosting research visits (for researchers from Spain, Brazil, and Slovakia) and CIAC members’ missions, partnerships and international networks continued to develop. An example is a visit to LAIS – Laboratory of Technological Innovation in Health (Brazil), which may result in a new collaboration partnership in 2024.

CIAC also promoted the publication of the book “Popular Genres and Transnational Cinema in the Mediterranean Europe,” an analysis of popular cinema in Mediterranean Europe through a historical and transnational perspective; and the e-book “Elvis Presley and the Popular Culture of the Twentieth Century,” which aims to contribute to a reflection on the career of the American singer, whose cultural impact extends from the 1950s to the present day.

Throughout the year 2023, CIAC continued to actively participate in international publications (Springer), such as in the editions “Perspectives and Trends in Education and Technology,” “Perspectives on Design and Digital Communication IV,” and “International Handbook of Skill, Education, Learning, and Research Development in Tourism and Hospitality.”

2022

In 2022, CIAC continued to focus its activity on research, practice, and training in the field of Arts and Communication.

CIAC organized various scientific events in the field of Arts and Communication, examples of which are: the exhibitions ““A Imagem que Emerge” (February), “Os braços abertos formam ângulos rectos” (April), ““[In]tangibilidades Digitais”” (July) and “Crime e Pesadelo: O Film-Noir no Cinema de Hollywood (1941-1957)” (October); the conferences “Literature, Tourism and Waterscapes” (April), “Contemporary Art and the Media after 9/11” (May) and “shadows of film noir” (October); the seminars “Media Arte e Documentário cinematográfico: poética”, “Fake News e Desinformação: ameaças ao jornalismo e à democracia” (May) and “Geografias de Saramago” (November); the Colloquium “La fortune de Molière: répertoires, mythes et interprétations” (November); the cycle of Visual Arts (March, April and May); and the Sciences of Communication Seminars (October, November and December).

Another noteworthy event was the ”XVI CIAC Conference” (February), which took place both in person and online and brought together national and international researchers to share and discuss methodologies and concepts. Issue #1 comprised research papers related to journalism and professional practices in the digital context; media access and online information consumption; and projects, actions, and tools for the development of media literacy. Issue #2, on the other hand, focused on the representation of women in silent cinema; on singular experiences of sound in cinematographic exhibition; on silent cinema in the Portuguese press; and on the effects of cinema on the Portuguese intellectual elite in the decade 1914-1924.

Other exploratory research projects stand out: “CyPeT” (2021-2023), which aims at the theoretical and practical exploration of cyberperformance; and “PROPS” (approved for funding in 2022 and to start in 2023), which aims to act in prevention and media education, with a view to containing online hate speech.

The CIAC hub for Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion (IPSantarém) promoted events in its domain (“Digital Innovation: moving forward” (February) and “Simpósio de Formação Avançada de Projetos ID+I Erasmus KA2_FCT” are two examples) and continued participating in various international projects: “Escape Room Workflows of Innovation,” co–financed by La Caixa Foundation – BPI; “FEMST – Empowering girls with knowledge and confidence in STEM to become future STEM leaders,” “PREDICT: Jobs of the Future with AI 4 VET inclusion”, “PREDICT: Jobs of the Future with AI 4 VET inclusion”, “Changemakers: Emerging experience for youth,” “Front Winners: (re)skilling for mentors with immersive experiences,” DID.VALUE on Internship and Job in Society”, “Entrepreneurial Women in ICT – Enhancing Skills to Bridge Digital Divide,” “INNOSID – Innovative Solutions based on Emerging Technologies for Improving Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities,” co-financed by the Erasmus+programme.

The CIAC-UAb hub is associated with the PhD in Digital Media-Art (DMAD) and promotes regular activities that welcome the artistic and scientific work of the students of this doctorate. DMAD retreat is one of their key activities and, in July, the event got back to the face-to-face format, at Convento do Espírito Santo (Loulé), focused on the elements earth, water, and spirit. The program included conferences, masterclasses, workshops, a round table, a gathering and debate, and an exhibition. Another noteworthy event was the 1st Symposium on Digital Media-Art (November), which presented CIAC’s research group on Digital Media-Art and research results of projects by CIAC-UAb hub; and promoted synergy and collaboration networks. In addition, the symposium also allowed DMAD students to present and discuss the initial/intermediate results of their ongoing thesis research. The hub also takes part in the organization of international events, highlighting, this year, the International Conference “ARTeFACTo 2022” (November), which took place in Macau and in online format. These conferences often provide a first opportunity for PhD students to take part in international events and/or indexed publications.

It is also worth mentioning the projects in which CIAC-UAb hub was involved and are currently ongoing: “Erasmus+ IDEAS – Innovative Digital Education and Skills”, “Erasmus+ 4ArtPreneur – Innovative thinking competencies for creative art entrepreneurship”, “Erasmus+ ARDES – Short Learning Programme for ARt & DEsign & Sustainability with special focus on environment and climate change” and “Nutrimovere”.

CIAC-IPL hub reaffirmed its lines of action in research and creation in the field of scenic Performativities and Moving Image. This year, their activities focused on three fundamental aspects: production of critical bibliography on topics that cross literature, Performing Arts and moving image; dramaturgical creation for theater shows (staged, translated and published texts); scenic creation (conception, direction and interpretation in theater/music/performance).

In 2022, their commitment to strengthening relations with local entities and the development of networks and partnerships was maintained. It is worth mentioning, for example, the support of the Center in the curatorship/programming of Galeria Trem (Faro) and the partnership relationship with MuseuZer0, the Municipal Museum of Faro, the Open Studios initiative, BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts, the Avanca Film Festival, FICLA – International Film and Literature Festival of the Algarve, the “Insulina Sai à Rua” Project, Studio Rudolfo Quintas, and Teatro Umano.

CIAC seeks to promote artistic and Scientific Dissemination, developing projects and introducing actions in the national and international framework that promote the debate of ideas and the development of knowledge.

The “Invitro seminar cycle“ (June and July) was one of the activities carried out in 2022 within the framework of the ”Invitro” project. Examples are: the collaboration protocol with the New Media Art Lab of Incheon National University (South Korea); the partnership with Rede Alfamed (Peru), and the Institute for Culture and Arts of the Federal University of Ceará (Brazil).

The collection “Creation Processes” was created with the goal of Scientific Dissemination, but also as a result of international relations. This project is developed by CIAC-UAlg and the Research Group on Creation Processes (Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Brazil). Books in this collection emphasize the importance of creation processes; explore creation archives, diluting the boundaries between process and work; and result from the theoretical look of process criticism. Three volumes have been released:” Eustáquio Neves: photographic subject“by Paula Martinelli, focused on photography and the image of art; ”Roberto Alencar: the body in transit“by Wagner de Miranda, which focuses on the paths of Roberto Alencar’s artistic composition; and“ Anna Maria Maiolino: artistic project under construction,” by Vinícius Gonçalves, which reflects on Anna Maria Maiolino’s artistic work, through the study of a diversity of writings and documents of her creation process.

CIAC also promoted the publication of “Literary Hotels of Portugal,” coordinated by Sílvia Quinteiro, about Portuguese hotels that were temporary homes of writers, inspired literary works, housed fictional characters, and were important meeting points for writers and artists.

Throughout 2022, CIAC continued the “CIAC Webinars”, a program aimed at Culture, Arts and Communication, with national and international guests: “Creation in Documentary Cinema”, with Alfonso Palazón (January); “Literary Heritage, gastronomic heritage and tourism”, with Ana Lavrador Cândida Cadavez, Maria José Pires, Goreti Botelho and Isabel Dâmaso Santos (February); “Cineclubism and the formation of audiences”, with Gabriel Rodriguez (March); “Politics on the prairie, blood in the streets: contextualizing Italian filone cinema”, with Austin Fisher (April); “Researching the history of European studios 1930-1960”, with Tim Bergfelder and Eleanor Halsall (May); “Forms of presence in audiovisual performance”, with Patrícia Moran (June); “Análise à imprensa de Macau”, with José Simões (September); “Nos 60 anos do agente 007: James Bond em dos tempos”, with Gelson Santana (October); and “The decolonising potentials and pitfalls of participatory video as a research tool”, with Pamela Richardson (November).

2021

CIAC continued to focus its activity on research, practice, and training, in the field of arts and communication, ensuring that research is thought with and for society.

In 2021, the Centre organised different scientific events in the field of arts and communication, examples of which are: the Visual Arts Cycle (March, April and May); the exhibitions “Alvará” (April), “Da Terra à Lua, a Pé” (June), “1907-1914: the first golden age of French cinema in the poster collection of the Faro Municipal Museum” (July) and “You Want It Darker” (November); the conference cycle “Language and Communication Policies” (April) and the “V Conference on Ethics in Organizations” (December); the “Meeting “Expressions with Sound and Image” (April); the symposium “Literature & Tourism: museification and communication of writers’ places” (April); the webinar “Art and Entrepreneurship” (October); and the seminars “The digital teacher: experiences of a project on the use of digital tools in the classroom” (October), “The cinema of origins and the poster collection of the Faro Municipal Museum” (November), “Storytelling in organisational communication” (November), “Communication, linguistics and intercultural encounters” and “Semiotics and Visual Culture” (December).

Also of note is the organization of the “XV CIAC Research Journeys” (July), an event that brought together, in an online format, researchers to share, problematize and discuss methodologies and concepts. This year’s edition dedicated its program to the Centre’s geographic diversity and included the presentation of projects from CIAC’s poles (UAlg, ESTC-IPL, UAb, IPSantarém, and ISMAI) and international interventions, which mirrored the multiplicity of research stays that CIAC hosts annually and which contribute to the widening and dynamism of the Centre’s work networks.

CIAC continued to promote the publication of works about the research results produced at the Centre. In December 2021, the fourth volume of the essay collection “Humanitas” was published, entitled “Audiovisual Communication: the love train”, written by Bruno Mendes da Silva. Through the analysis of some specific moments in the history of cinema, this work explores the most relevant concepts of audiovisual language, using a metaphor: the train of love. The predominance of audiovisual language in contemporary communication is unavoidable and, therefore, its conceptual, aesthetic, formal, and technical mastery becomes imperative.

In addition, the production of artistic and scientific dissemination contents was maintained, namely through the initiative “CIAC Talks”, which is an audiovisual product of interviews with researchers, teachers and artists (national and international); and “ROTURA – Revista de Comunicação, Cultura e Artes”, which, in 2021, included the publication of two issues: “Film and Video Game” (1st semester) and “Creation Processes” (2nd semester). Issue 1 welcomed research articles related to technology, film and video games; aesthetics and audiovisual production; video art and art game; digital media and interactivity; history of cinema/video game. The second issue focused on creation theory; interactions between arts and communication; contemporary poetics; materialities of creation; creation and reception.

In 2021, CIAC’s “Literature and Tourism” research group created “LIT&TOUR: International Journal of Literature and Tourism Research” (IJLTR), a scientific journal with a continuous publication regime, which will have its first publication in the 2nd semester of 2022.

Some projects have been developed, namely “Entre Planos” – a replacement of the project “Primeiro Plano: o espectador em construção” (2020) -, which falls within the area of film, cinema and audiovisual literacy among children and youth audiences. Conceived as an inter-institutional platform, “Entre Planos” involves several national and international partners.

The “World Reading Academy: Journalism, Communication and Me” is another project in which CIAC is a partner. Integrating the national network of Gulbenkian Knowledge Academies and through an immersive experience in the world of media, this project aims to provide young people aged between 14 and 25 with the tools to decode the news, question the passive consumption of information and stimulate a critical and constructive attitude appropriate to the challenges of contemporary news and media culture.

CIAC’s Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion Hub, created in 2020 and based in IPSantarém, develops activities in the area of Digital Literacy and Inclusion of Disadvantaged People in the Labour Market, thus responding to society’s challenges in these fields of activity. “Innovation Scenarios – Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility in DE” (May) and “Digital Literacy for the Labour Market Inclusion – Starting Up Multiplier Event” (June) are two examples of events promoted by this Hub in 2021. Internationalisation is also one of its priorities, hence its participation in the “EduApp” and “Talent” projects, co-funded by Erasmus+.

Through the PhD in Digital Media-Art (DMAD), which works in association between Universidade Aberta (UAb) and Universidade do Algarve (UAlg), CIAC has attracted new collaborators. The CIAC-UAb Hub is deeply related to the DMAD and promotes regular activities that welcome the artistic and scientific work of the students of that PhD. The DMAD Retreat is a core activity and in 2021 it was adapted to an online format (due to the pandemic). Integrated in the programme of the “XV CIAC Days” (July), this event included presentations of lectures and digital media artifacts.

The CIAC-UAb Unit also collaborates in the organization of conferences, highlighting, this year, the “ARTECH” international conference (October), which was held in hybrid mode, but with strong face-to-face participation, at the Aveiro Congress Centre. This type of conference is often the first experience of PhD students in international events and/or indexed publications. ARTECH” which includes installations/digital artifacts and the submission of short posters/papers referring to those same installations, thus allowing a relatively rare integration between scientific publication and artistic practice. It should also be mentioned the projects with the involvement of the CIAC-UAb Pole, which are under development: “Erasmus+ IDEAS – Innovative Digital Education and Skills”, “Erasmus+ 4ArtPreneur – Innovative thinking competences for creative art entrepreneurship”, “Cultural Adventures”, “TIS – Social Inclusion Theatre” and “Nutrimovere”.

The year 2021, still greatly affected by the pandemic conjuncture, corresponds to the consolidation of the lines of action of the CIAC Pole, at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. The entry of a new member of the Cinema Department reinforced the nucleus of applied research and creation in the field of Performativities, which constitutes the aggregating concept of the activities of the cluster. This year, the activities developed were centred on three fundamental aspects: production of critical bibliography on topics that cross literature, performing arts and the moving image; dramaturgical creation for theatre performances (texts premiered and/or translated and published); scenic creation (direction and/or interpretation in theatre/music/performance).

During this period, and despite the constraints caused by the pandemic, CIAC continued to invest in strengthening relationships with local entities and in developing networks and partnerships (local, regional and international). Of note, for example, is the Centre’s support in the curatorship/programming of Galeria Trem (Faro), the partnership relationship with MuseuZer0 (Tavira), the Open Studios initiative (Faro), BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts and the ICOAH international conference.

One of CIAC’s objectives is to promote artistic and scientific dissemination, developing projects and inserting actions in the national and international fabric to promote the debate of ideas, the exchange of knowledge and the production of new knowledge.

The “Invitro” seminar cycle (May-June) and the “Entre Tecidos” exhibition (September) are two examples of activities carried out, in 2021, under the “Invitro” project. This is an initiative in the area of digital arts and transdisciplinary thinking and practices, which seeks to welcome, promote and empower artists, researchers and audiences.

International partnerships continued to be nurtured, namely through the European project “Play Your Role: Gamification Against Hate Speech”. It should be noted that the project involves institutions such as Società Cooperativa Sociale Zaffiria (Italy), COSPE – Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo dei Paesi Emergenti ONLUS (Italy), VsI Edukaciniai Projektai (Lithuania), JFF – Institute for Media Education (Germany), Fundacja Nowoczesna Polska (Poland) and Savoir Devenir (France). “Play Your Role” uses the strong potential and attractiveness of video games to create spaces for dialogue and develop critical thinking in young people, in the fight against online hate speech. CIAC participated in the international meeting “Play Your Role: Gamification against hate speech” (May); organized the workshop “Play Your Role – Gamification Against Hate Speech” (May) at the session “The World Reading Academy: Journalism, Communication and Me”, of the initiative “Gulbenkian Knowledge Academies”; and was present at the plenary conference “Games Against Hate Speech” (September), included in the project’s closing event. Throughout the year, articles were published on the results/conclusions of the project (namely in international publications such as “Húmus Magazine”).

In addition, through the hosting of research internships (mainly of researchers from Spain and Brazil), under the supervision of CIAC members, international partnerships and networks continued to develop. From these internships, even if some of them were postponed by the pandemic, resulted seminars and publications on the areas of action of the Centre (namely digital culture, transdisciplinary digital literacy, audiovisual production, audiovisual contents and formats).

It is worth mentioning CIAC’s participation in the European Language Council (ELC), an association of Universities, language centres and professionals in the area of languages that has structured and coordinated European projects and has established itself as a platform for liaison with European bodies and other associations/alliances. The involvement of the Centre has contributed to the construction of a work network, with international articulation, directed towards scientific terminology and science communication.

Also of note is its involvement in other international projects such as LISTiac (Linguistically Sensitive Teaching in All Classrooms), which aims to contribute to a change in teachers’ cognition, training and professional development. Another example is the TE-Con3 project (Teaching English as Content in Tertiary Education), with the aim of developing an innovative methodology for teaching English in Higher Education, based on a sequence of modules adjusted to the language complexity and grammaticality of different academic areas. Finally, the Erasmus + ICFAL project (Institutionnalisation des Centres de Formation par ALternance aux Universités Marocaines), which aims to develop study cycles and on-the-job training in line with Morocco’s economic and social development needs.

We would also like to highlight some of the activities that have contributed to the broadening of the Centre’s international relations: the lectures “The justification of the translator in the technologic age”, “The importance of translation in peripheral languages: the case of Galician” (May) and “The mosaic of languages: Society and languages in Galicia” (December), promoted by the Centre for Galician Studies and supported by CIAC; the seminars “Las variedades meridionales del Español: reflexiones para el estudio de la modalidad lingüística andaluza” (May), “Buscar las Historias (ficción y realidad)” (June) and “Les Mathématiques sont aussi des faits de langue(s). Comment comptons-nous dans nos langues?” (July), organized in partnership with the Institut de Recherche sur l’Enseignement des Mathématiques – IREM (University of Paris); the “International Conference on Arts and Humanities – ICOAH” (September), with the participation of Bruno Mendes da Silva in the Technical Sessions Evaluation Panel; the international conference “The Linguistic, Educational and Intercultural Research – LEIC Research 2021” (October), which had researcher Manuel Célio Conceição as invited speaker; among others.

In 2021, CIAC also participated in the 2nd Steering Committee of the “iHeritage” project (July) and advanced with the creation of its website. “iHeritage” seeks to consolidate access to UNESCO’s Mediterranean cultural heritage through augmented and immersive reality experiences, with the creation of living labs aimed at research and development. The iHERITAGE Mediterranean ICT platform for UNESCO’s cultural heritage is a strategic project co-funded by the European Union’s ENI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme, with the participation of six countries: Italy, Egypt, Spain, Jordan, Portugal and Lebanon.

Another platform that continued to be developed in 2021 is related to the collection “Processes of Creation”, a project born from the exchange between CIAC-UAlg and the Research Group on Creation Processes from PUC-SP – Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (Brazil). The books of the collection highlight the importance of creation processes; explore creation archives, blurring the boundaries between process and work; and result from the theoretical view of process criticism.

In the scope of scientific dissemination, but also as a result of international relations, the book “The Forking Paths: Interactive Film and Media” appears, published in September 2021. This book revisits historically, socially, pedagogically and aesthetically the last 50 years of audiovisual interactivity. The project “The Forking Paths” began in 2013, when a group of researchers of the Centre started a process of theoretical and practical research in the area of film interactivity and, since then, dozens of scientific publications have been written and four interactive film experiences have been produced (which were exhibited in international reference festivals such as FILE (São Paulo, Brazil), or Script Road (Macau, China). In 2021, CIAC researchers were joined by some of the world’s leading experts in interactive film and media, resulting in “The Forking Paths: Interactive Film and Media”. In this book, we discover notes that seem to indicate a possible evolution in audiovisual syntax.

In the last quarter of the year, CIAC also launched a monthly programme of webinars – the “CIAC Webinars” -, aimed at the areas of culture, arts and communication, with international guests. The first edition took place in October with Nigel Power (British artist, designer and academic), under the title “Re-rememberings: notes on the visual culture of post-coup Thailand (2014-2019)”); followed by Adriana Nascimento (Brazilian researcher, teacher and curator) with “Feminist Poetics in Body, Space and Time”, in November; and Tom McCarthy (British writer and visual artist), who, in December, presented the work “The Making of Incarnation” (2021) and focused on the process of creation and writing.

Despite the pandemic context, it was possible to contribute to the dissemination and expansion of scientific knowledge.

2020

CIAC has continued to direct its activity towards research, practice and training in the field of arts and communication, ensuring that research is thought with and for society. It is in this sense that CIAC continues to focus on the creation of platforms that favour artistic and scientific dissemination, as well as the deepening between the arts and technologies in their various aspects.

In 2020, CIAC organised different scientific events in the field of arts and communication, examples of which are: the exhibitions “The eyes are not here” (February), “Zoom In” (November) and “The Getaway to the Stars” (November); the “Communication & Advertising Seminar” (February); the lectures “Interactive Cinema” (March) and “Latin American Artists” (April); the “Literature and Film” and “Screenwriting” workshops (April); the “Galician Literature Week” (May), the “Visual Arts Cycle” (September-December), the “Women in Arts” colloquium (November), the “III Conference on Ethics in Organisations” (November), among others. Also of note is the organisation of the “XIV CIAC Research Journeys” (February), an event that brought together researchers to share, problematise and discuss methodologies, concepts and paths. This year’s edition dedicated its programme to the communication of science, art, literacy and new media and allowed the dissemination of the results of multidisciplinary projects and works under development at CIAC, to the community in general. Science communication is effectively one of CIAC’s missions and, in this sense, activities and events that enable the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the Centre’s fields of action are promoted.

In the same line of knowledge dissemination, CIAC continued to promote the publication of works on the research results produced at the Centre. In 2020, the third volume of the essay collection “Humanitas” was published, under the title “The Museum of Everything Everywhere – Digital Art and Culture: inter-fering and curating”. It is a current and in-depth contribution to the study of Digital Media Art, which presents an innovative methodology, a/r/cography, as a tool for recording and analysing the creative process, for the production of interventional and functional digital media art.

In addition, the production of artistic and scientific dissemination contents was maintained, namely through the initiative “CIAC Talks”, which is an audiovisual product of interviews with national and international researchers, teachers and artists. The website of “ROTURA – Revista de Comunicação, Cultura e Artes” became available in 2020 and, in July, the first call for the submission of research articles in the areas of film and video game was launched.

Some projects were carried out, namely “Primeiro Plano – o espectador em construção”, which aims to bring together projects and initiatives that develop cinema for, with and through children and young people, within the scope of education. Conceived as an inter-institutional platform, the project aims to create a network of initiatives in cinema and education in Portugal.

CIAC also created a Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion hub at the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém (IPS), where it supported the development of the course “Digital Literacy for the Labour Market” (non-degree), the first model of training and inclusive education in higher education for intellectual disabilities. The aim is to promote and facilitate the social and labour inclusion and employability of these young people, through their training and development of specific skills in digital literacy adjusted to the needs of the labour market, with a view to building an adjusted professional profile. This centre is aligned with a network of international partners dedicated to the topic of digital literacy, among them: Center for Social Innovation (Cyprus); Research Group Imágenes, Palabras e Ideas – GIPI (Spain); Research Group on Language Studies, Libras, Special and Distance Education and Technologies (Brazil); and Native Scientist (United Kingdom).

Through the PhD in Digital Media-Art (DMAD), which works in association between Aberta University (UAb) and University of Algarve (UAlg), CIAC has attracted new collaborators. It should be noted that the CIAC-UAb pole is deeply related to the DMAD and promotes regular activities that welcome the artistic and scientific work of the students of that PhD. The DMAD Retreat is a key face-to-face activity that brings together students from the PhD, artists and researchers, and has a relevant impact on society, usually involving local authorities, galleries or associations. This activity, which took place in July 2020, was adapted to the online format due to the pandemic and, recreating in the remote context the fundamental activities of the Retreat, included presentations of lectures and digital artefacts.

In addition, the CIAC-UAb collaborates in the regular organization of conferences, highlighting, in 2020, the international conference ARTeFACTo, which took place on 26th and 27th November, in Faro. This is an event with a growing participation of international authors, which includes installations/digital artifacts (which, in fact, are exhibited during the event) and the submission of posters/short papers on those same installations, thus allowing a relatively rare integration between scientific publication and artistic practice.

The following CIAC-UAb pole projects, in continuous development, are also worth mentioning: CHIC, SCReLProg, Cultural Adventures, Gender in Map, Erasmus+AIT, and ENPOWER.

The year 2020 also corresponds to the beginning of a new phase of CIAC’s hub at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (IPL), with the entry of three new members to reinforce the nucleus of applied research and creation in the field of Performativities, which is the aggregating concept of the hub’s activities. This year, the activities developed were centred in three fundamental areas: production of critical bibliography on topics that cross literature, performing arts and the moving image; dramaturgical creation for theatre performances (premiered or distinguished texts); and scenic creation (direction and/or interpretation in theatre/music/performance).

During this period, and despite the constraints caused by the pandemic, CIAC continued to invest in strengthening relationships with local entities and in developing networks and partnerships (local, regional and international). Of note, for example, is the Centre’s support in the curatorship/programming of Galeria Trem (Faro), in Som Riscado – Music and Image Festival (Loulé) and in the Olhão International Film and Literature Festival; the partnership relationship with MuseuZer0 (Tavira) and the Open Studios initiative (Faro).

One of CIAC’s goals is also to build digital platforms that promote artistic and scientific dissemination and, in this sense, in 2020, the creation of the websites of two projects was advanced: “INVITRO” and “Processos de Criação”. The first, assuming itself as a transdisciplinary centre for research, development and experimentation of artefacts in Art, Technology and Science, results from a partnership between Universidade Aberta, CIAC and Artech International. “INVITRO” is an initiative in the field of digital arts and transdisciplinary thinking and practices, which seeks to welcome, promote and empower artists, researchers and audiences. For this it has an international residency programme, a curatorial programme and a programme of workshops, round tables and seminars. The “Creation Processes” collection is the result of an exchange between CIAC-UAlg and the Research Group on Creation Processes of PUC-SP – Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (Brazil). The books of the collection highlight the importance of creation processes, as an increasingly present theme in contemporary artistic discussions; they explore creation archives, blurring the boundaries between process and work; and result from the theoretical perspective of process criticism. Its degree of originality should be noted in a field with little bibliography in the Portuguese language.

In 2020, international partnerships continued to be nurtured through different activities, namely through the European project “Play Your Role: Gamification Against Hate Speech”. This project involves institutions such as Società Cooperativa Sociale Zaffiria (Italy), COSPE – Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo dei Paesi Emergenti ONLUS (Italy), VsI Edukaciniai Projektai (Lithuania), JFF – Institute for Media Education (Germany), Fundacja Nowoczesna Polska (Poland) and Savoir Devenir (France). “Play Your Role” uses the strong potential and attractiveness of video games to create spaces for dialogue and develop critical thinking in young people, in the fight against online hate speech. Video games thus appear as a pedagogical vector in addressing issues of discrimination, sharing tools for dealing with conflict and promoting citizenship among teenagers. CIAC hosted preparation meetings for the “Play Your Role” project (January); published, throughout the year, articles on the results/conclusions of the first phase of that project (namely in international publications such as the magazine “Comunicando” and the “Journal of Digital Media & Interaction”); and participated in meetings and conferences to present the initiative (“Gulbenkian Knowledge Academies”, “DIGICOM 2020″ – International Conference on Digital Design & Communication”, “XIV CIAC Research Journeys”). This year, given the contingencies arising from the pandemic, the “Hackathon” meeting (scheduled for March, in Italy) was adapted and several online events were promoted in October.

In addition, by hosting research internships (mainly of researchers from Spain and Brazil), under the supervision of CIAC members, international partnerships and networks continued to develop. From these internships, even if some of them were interrupted by the pandemic, resulted seminars and publications on the Centre’s areas of action (namely on media literacy, webseries and audiovisual advertising).

Also worth mentioning is CIAC’s participation in the European Language Council (ELC). This is an association of universities, language centres and associations of language professionals (translators, revisers, interpreters) that has structured and coordinated European projects and has established itself as a platform for liaison with European bodies and other associations/alliances. The involvement of the Centre has contributed to the construction of a work network, with international articulation, focused on scientific terminology and science communication.

We also highlight some of the activities that contributed to the broadening of the Centre’s international relations: the cycle of conferences on linguistic diversity “The Round Table of Languages” (February), promoted by the Centre for Galician Studies and supported by CIAC; the conference “Besides The Screen” (July), organized by CIAC-ISMAI, CITEI – Instituto Universitário da Maia, Kings College London (UK) and POSCOM of the Universidade Federal Espírito Santo (Brazil); the talk “Far is a place that doesn’t exist”, promoted by Instituto das Artes da Unicamp (Brazil) and that had CIAC researchers as invited speakers; the cycle “Diálogos Oblicuos: notas entre la arquitectura y otros campos” (November), the result of the partnership between CIAC and the Secretaría de Investigación de la Facultad de Arquitectura de UNC (Argentina); CIAC’s participation in the “IV Ciclo de Conferencias y Seminarios de Formación para la Transferencia de Conocimiento” (November), invited by the University of Alicante; among others.

Still within the scope of scientific dissemination, but also as a result of relationships with international entities, the participation of the film “Cadavre Exquis” in File – Electronic Language International Festival (Brazil) stands out. This project, which began in 2017 and was developed in collaboration with the University of São José (Macau), the production company Art8Macau, Creative Macau and the Macau Institute, is an interactive film that allows you to interact with the characters in the narrative through body language. In 2020, by integrating the referred festival, it contributed to the dissemination of the research carried out by CIAC on interactive film and the possibilities of viewer immersion.

Despite the pandemic context, CIAC supported and encouraged the participation of its researchers in national and international meetings and publications, aiming the dissemination of the work produced and the expansion of scientific knowledge.

2016-2019

CIAC continued to focus its efforts on the creation of digital platforms that foster artistic and scientific dissemination, in addition to strengthening ties between the arts and technologies in their various aspects. Our primary concern is to disseminate and promote the work produced: the centre’s website is being reformulated, to make it a dynamic and innovative cross-media platform, ensuring the dissemination of all work produced and thus stimulating the creation of new artistic and communication languages; we make use of available means (social networks, platforms, partnerships) to disseminate the centre’s production as part of a strategy designed to comply with its initial goal: to innovate research in the field of arts and communication and to promote the production and distribution of material, with an eye to true literacy in the arts and the media.

The new version of the romanceiro.pt platform was recently launched. The aim of this platform is to open the Portuguese ‘Romanceiro’ Archive [Modern Portuguese Oral Tradition Literary Works] to a non-specialist audience, offering the user, through a revamped website (www.romanceiro.pt), new resources and new research tools allowing direct and documented access to more than 10,000 versions of tales, poetry, and ballads of the Portuguese oral tradition. We continue to develop and add to the following platforms: Invitrolab (http://invitrolab.eu/), a cross-disciplinary platform for art, technology, and science, which has enabled the support of digital artistic creation; the ‘Os caminhos que se bifurcam’ platform (http://bruno.oscaminhosquesebifurcam.ciac.pt), which has helped stimulate interactive film projects; the ‘Ephemeral Expanded’ platform (http://www.ephemeral-expanded.net), which has enabled the dissemination of ephemeral digital artistic expressions.

In 2017 we held the 11th edition of the ‘Jornadas do CIAC’ conference, a moment for discussion between the center’s researchers, sharing their research and results on topics related to communication, culture and the arts. Highlights of the 11th edition included the organization of a thematic session dedicated to newsreels, which enjoyed special participation from international researchers, bringing to the Algarve a serious moment of reflection on this topic from an enriching international perspective.

In the same vein of dissemination of knowledge, in December 2016, the first book in the Humanitas Collection was published: Buñuel e o Surrealismo: a Arquitetura do Sonho [Buñuel and Surrealism: Dream Architecture], by Mirian Tavares. This essay collection aims to disseminate the results of research produced at this centre, reflecting the healthy cross-over nature of CIAC research, which covers the Arts, Communication and Culture, Languages/Literature and Digital Humanities. This collection reflects the desirable harmony between the study of new languages, new processes and methods, and the soundness of knowledge that prolongs theoretical and critical traditions.

We have put our faith in strengthening ties with research centres in other areas of research and knowledge production, establishing protocols with local organisations, such as the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve [Algarve Living Science Centre], where we put on a Digital Art exhibition as part of the Digital Media Arts PhD retreat.

Tasks provided for under international projects have been carried out, in partnership with other institutions, with external funding, such as the Erasmus Project, 4CDE (Code, Content, Creation and Culture for Digital Education) in the area of digital skills, the main aim of which is to broaden the choice of open educational resources to help educators and teachers to learn ICT basics, namely through the artistic use of digital technologies; the ChIMERA project, funded by the Interreg MED Programme, the main aim of which is to improve the capacity for innovation of public and private players in the cultural and creative industry in participating regions and in the Mediterranean region, by strengthening transnational cooperation and ties between companies, research organisations and public authorities in key sectors in the Mediterranean region; the ‘Telemedia-Arte’ Project, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with a view to promoting the improvement of the process of online distance teaching and artistic learning; the ‘Tutoria Virtual’’ [Virtual Tutoring] project, with the aim of creating a mediator for learning in online higher education, developed by the Universidade Aberta [Open University], in partnership with the Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, the Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering, Research and Development, in Lisbon, the Centre for Research in Arts and Communication and supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology; the M5SAR Project: MOBILE FIVE SENSES AUGMENTED REALITY SYSTEM FOR MUSUEMS, funded by the Portugal2020 programme, CRESC Algarve 2020 I&DT; with the aim of developing an augmented reality system, achieved through a platform and an application, with the aim of exploring the 5 human senses.

The Digital Media Art PhD course has brought new researchers to CIAC, who are developing research in the area of Digital Media Art, both at CIAC, in the University of the Algarve, and at CIAC, on the Universidade Aberta campus. It should also be noted that some of the centre’s projects, which include the fusion of research and artistic practices, have been continued during the period covered by this report, in particular: the exhibitions programme at the Trem Gallery; organising the exhibition programme at the Milreu Roman Ruins exhibition site, in Estoi; CIAC’s involvement in scheduling the Atalaia Artes Performativas [Atalaia Performing Arts], as well as in scheduling the “Project of the new art of making ruins”, hosted by CIAC.

CIAC has welcomed several national and international postdoctoral researchers, namely Brazilians, from universities with which CIAC upholds exchange protocols.

2015

2015 highlights of research undertaken at CIAC include the following results: in the field of literacy, the conclusions of the ‘Framework for Film Literacy in Europe’ project were presented at the Cinemathèque Française. This project resulted in the implementation of various European film literacy platforms – FLP, including the Portuguese language platform hosted on the CIAC website, thus giving visibility to film literacy work developed in Portugal, particularly in the field of advanced and basic training; the 9th edition of the ‘Jornadas do CIAC’ conference took place, providing a moment to take stock and reveal research developed at the centre. The premise behind this edition was to present some of the master’s and PhD research underway, within the scope of the Communication, Culture and Arts programmes of the University of the Algarve and in Digital Media Art, the combined provision of UAlg and the Universidade Aberta.

Postdoctoral students developing research at CIAC, both resident and part of foreign programmes carrying out research stays attended the conference; in the field of computer arts and creative media the INVITRO – Centre for Transdisciplinary Art & Technology project started, resulting from a partnership between the Universidade Aberta, CIAC and Artech International, the mission of which is to work towards the development of technological artefacts based on inter-, multi- and cross-disciplinary intersection, collaboration between sectors, innovation and creative thinking. 2015 saw the realisation of international residency programmes, a curatorial programme and a public programme of workshops, round tables and seminars; in the ‘Texto & Cena’ [Text & Stage] research group, in addition to numerous publications concerning the production of critical thinking, applied research and specialised bibliography in the context of writing for the theatre and theatre and community, highlights include the “Dramas de Princesas.
