Situated knowledges, unnaming methods, and visions from the threshold\u201d<\/em>. Co-organised by CIAC<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>and Communication and ICNOVA \u2013 NOVA Institute of Communication at NOVA FCSH, the event will take place at the Penha Campus, using Auditorium 1.5 and the Atrium, with additional activities at GAMA RAMA Gallery in Faro.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference brings together researchers, artists, filmmakers, performers, curators and activists to reflect on the relationships between images, territory, memory and ecology. Over three days, the programme combines keynote lectures, panel discussions, performances, workshops, an artists\u2019 talk and a cinema session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thinking and creating with the Earth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking the question <em><strong>\u201cHow to speak with(in) the earth?\u201d<\/strong><\/em> as its starting point, this edition invites reflection on ways of producing knowledge and representing territories in the context of the ecological crisis. The event seeks to explore other relationships with the Earth, considering forms of knowledge that emerge from specific places, bodies and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme brings together visual culture, artistic practices, memory studies and environmental humanities, examining the relationship between ways of seeing and structures of power. Topics include extractivism, colonial legacies, relationships between species, and the possibilities for developing practices of care, belonging and reparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Opening and closing keynote lectures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opening keynote will take place on\u00a0<strong>18 November, from 9:30 to 11:00<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>Gabriela Milone and Franca Maccioni<\/strong>, from the National University of C\u00f3rdoba, Argentina. Entitled<strong><em>\u00a0\u201cThe Earth and Language, Materialist inquiries between geo-logy and geo-graphy: a question of method\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, the session will be chaired by\u00a0<strong>Salom\u00e9 Lopes Coelho<\/strong>, from ICON \u2013 Utrecht University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closing keynote will take place on\u00a0<strong>20 November, from 17:00 to 18:00<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>Felipe Milanez<\/strong>, from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. His lecture,\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cForest Pedagogies: ontological disorder and collective resilience on the Anthropocene frontiers\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, will be chaired by\u00a0<strong>In\u00eas Beleza Barreiros<\/strong>, from ICNOVA \u2013 NOVA FCSH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Both sessions will offer English translation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eleven discussion panels and contributions from CIAC researchers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The academic programme comprises\u00a0<strong>eleven thematic panels<\/strong>, addressing topics such as situated futures, ecological and sonic epistemologies, photography and landscape, extractive territories, multispecies migrations, decolonising the gaze, and the Earth as archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CIAC\u2019s participation includes\u00a0<strong>S\u00edlvia Leiria Viegas<\/strong>, who will present, alongside\u00a0<strong>Jan Babnik<\/strong>, from Institute IRRIS in Ljubljana, the paper\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cLisbon, in a Manner of Speaking: urban semiotics, deliberation, and pluriversal visual environments\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. Their contribution forms part of the panel <em>Counter-images: other grammars of the visible<\/em>, on 19 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 20 November,\u00a0<strong>Natalia Rojcovscaia-Tumaha<\/strong>, affiliated with CIAC \u2013 University of Algarve and WAAS, will participate in the panel\u00a0<em>Sonic epistemologies: listening, matter and worlds in transition<\/em>. On the same day,\u00a0<strong>Ana Carvalho<\/strong>, from CIAC \u2013 University of Maia\/Earthsea, will present\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cEcologias da Remo\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in the panel\u00a0<em>Decolonising the gaze: cartographies, borders and territories<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>S\u00edlvia Leiria Viegas<\/strong>\u00a0also serves on the organising committee, while\u00a0<strong>Bruno Mendes da Silva<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mirian Nogueira Tavares<\/strong>\u00a0are members of the scientific committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Workshops, performances and an artists\u2019 talk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme includes\u00a0<strong>five free workshops<\/strong>, dedicated to artistic experimentation and relationships with the body, plants, water and soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 18 November, the workshops will be\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cDesnomear o Corpo, Ativar o Rito: medita\u00e7\u00e3o e processo criativo como pr\u00e1tica de rela\u00e7\u00e3o com(o) a Terra\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, led by\u00a0<strong>Lina de Albuquerque<\/strong>, and\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cIn Our Hands an Alphabet: performing with languages of chalk\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, led by\u00a0<strong>H. C. Krempels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 19 November, the programme features\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cWriting (with) Plants: multispecies care as art practice\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, with\u00a0<strong>Heide Maria Baden, Vitalija Povilaityte-Petr and Konkankoh Joshua Ngwa<\/strong>, at Jardim Lu\u00eds Bivar, and\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cShiftings: an embodied practice with waterbodies\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, with\u00a0<strong>Luiz Ribeiro Fonseca and Chiara Muzzi<\/strong>, at Ria Formosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 20 November,\u00a0<strong>Gwendolyn Dora Cohen<\/strong>\u00a0will lead the<strong><em>\u00a0\u201cSoil Stories Workshop\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>at the Penha Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Participation in all five workshops is free, but registration is required via\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:counterimageconference@fcsh.unl.pt\"><strong>counterimageconference@fcsh.unl.pt<\/strong><\/a><strong>, subject to availability.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme also includes performances by\u00a0<strong>Rit\u00f3 Nat\u00e1lio<\/strong>, <strong>S\u00edlvia das Fadas<\/strong>, <strong>Nina Eick and S\u00e9rgio Oliv\u00e9<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At\u00a0<strong>GAMA RAMA Gallery<\/strong>, an artists\u2019 talk will bring together\u00a0<strong>Alexandra do Carmo, Romy Castro and S\u00edlvia Pinto Coelho<\/strong>, chaired by the latter, combining reflections on an Alentejo quarry, art as a laboratory of thought, and the practice of de-choreographing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the conference,\u00a0<strong>Pedro Castanheira<\/strong>\u00a0will develop the participatory project\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cDicion\u00e1rio Vivo \u2013 Pensar com a Luz: exerc\u00edcios para habitar o umbral\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, presenting its results on the final day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cinema and activities across the Algarve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\u00a0<strong>19 November, at 21:00<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Cineclube de Faro<\/strong>\u00a0will host the session<em><strong>\u00a0\u201cFor Palestine\u201d<\/strong><\/em>, featuring screenings of\u00a0<em>A Night We Held Between<\/em>\u00a0(2024), by\u00a0<strong>Noor Abed<\/strong>, and\u00a0<em>Foragers<\/em>\u00a0(2022), by\u00a0<strong>Jumana Manna<\/strong>. The session will be chaired by\u00a0<strong>Maria do Carmo Pi\u00e7arra<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Salom\u00e9 Lopes Coelho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme also includes activities before and after the three conference days: a visit to the dryland landscape at\u00a0<strong>Companhia das Culturas, in Castro Marim<\/strong>, on 17 November, and a visit to\u00a0<strong>Lagos<\/strong>, focusing on\u00a0<strong>Vale da Gafaria<\/strong>, on 21 November.
