EUROPEAN AWARD GIVEN TO A THESIS PREPARED AND DEFENDED AT UALG UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF MANUEL CÉLIO CONCEIÇÃO
The PhD thesis in Language Sciences “Language Competence in Higher Education”, written by Elisa Caruso and supervised by CIAC researcher Manuel Célio Conceição, has recently received the 1st prize of the Conseil Européen pour les Langues – European Language Council (CEL ELC). This is the first edition of the award, whose jury is composed by 12 members from Universities and Research Centres from several European countries.
The thesis, defended in 2019 at the University of Algarve, was developed within the scope of the research that Manuel Célio Conceição coordinated regarding multilingualism in Higher Education, in the European project MIME – Mobility and Inclusion in a Multilingual Europe, funded by the 7th framework program of the European Union (with a value of about 5 million euros).
In addition to the invitation to present her work at the CEL annual conference (dedicated, this year, to the theme “Languages and Rights”), the prize awarded to the Italian student translates into a monetary reward, complemented with the possibility of publishing an article in one of the journals associated with the CEL ELC (International Journal of Language Policy, Sustainable Multingualism or Verbum).
This award attests to the quality of the research on multilingualism and language policies carried out at the University of Algarve, within the framework of the PhD in Language Sciences, and within the scope of CIAC.
