Researchers of CIAC translate a centennial work
More than 150 years after the definitive edition of Kalevala, the epic poem by Elias Lönnrot was finally published in Portugal, in a direct translation from the Finnish by the hand of Ana Isabel Soares and Merja de Mattos-Parreira, researchers of CIAC. This project of translating the work from its original language to Portuguese began in the end of 2001, with an invitation by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs during former president Jorge Sampaio’s visit to that Nordic country. 12 years past and the result is a volume with 600 pages, which, according to Ana Isabel Soares, opens a window about the “language, the classic mythology, the paganism and the shamanism”. Beside the translation, the work also includes an introduction made by an expert, as well as a set of explanatory notes in order to diminish the cultural barriers between the two countries.
