Call for papers
The call for papers for the thematic dossier “New Perspectives on the cinema of Mediterranean Europe”, from the Tropos Magazine: Communication, Society and Culture, a biannual publication edited by the Federal University of Acre – UFAC, linked to the communication research groups , Society and Culture and Media, Imaginary and Representation – A Cartography of the Amazons (Mirca) of the Social Communication / Journalism degree at UFAC.
This dossier will be coordinated by Jorge Carrega, researcher at CIAC-Center for Research in Arts and Communication at the University of the Algarve and the researcher Paola Palma, who integrates UMR Thalim (CNRS / ENS / Université Paris 3).
Submissions, open until September 30, 2018, should focus on the “New Perspectives on the Cinema of Mediterranean Europe”.
DOSSIER: “New Perspectives on the Cinema of Mediterranean Europe”
Since George Méliès opened the cinema to the imagination and Enrico Guazzoni has created the epic film, Mediterranean Europe has played a key role in the history of the 7th art, thanks to the creative dynamics of the French, Italian and Spanish film industries, which on several occasions established fruitful partnerships that not only reflected market conditions but also the political and economic relations that were established between the countries of Western Europe.
The post-war years, notably the 1950s, 60s and 70s, marked the heyday of the film industries of Mediterranean Europe, thanks to a focus on co-production that allowed the development of transnational cinema models that have gained enormous popularity in markets such as Latin America and some Asian countries (popular genres) or in the major urban centers of Europe and the United States (author cinema). Thus, studies on the distribution and reception of these films in the various countries where they have been distributed, as well as the censorship practices to which they have been submitted, in particular by the dictatorial regimes of Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Argentina, should be deepened.
Indeed, in spite of cinematography from southern Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and former Yugoslavia), and in particular of its most notable filmmakers, they have attracted the attention of historians and film researchers, were analyzed from a Mediterranean perspective, with a focus on the historical and sociocultural characteristics that unite these countries and distinguish an important part of their cinematographic production, not only of the Hollywood cinema, but also of the cinematographies of the center and north of Europe.
Tropos Magazine invites authors to submit articles on the following topics:
– The historical importance of film co-production between Mediterranean European countries since the end of World War II;
– Models and practices of transnational cinema in Mediterranean Europe;
– Popular genres in the cinema of Mediterranean Europe;
– The distribution and reception of Mediterranean European cinema in Europe and Latin American countries;
– National and transnational identities in Mediterranean European cinema;
– Filmmakers from the Mediterranean: the author’s film as an expression of the cultures of the Mediterranean;
– The travel film in Mediterranean Europe;
– Practices of censorship and multiversion in the cinema of Mediterranean Europe;
– Issues of race, gender and identity in the cinema of Mediterranean Europe;
– The cinema of Mediterranean Europe and “Fortress Europe”: the problem of emigration seen by the cinema;
– The circulation of professionals in the film industry (actors, directors, screenwriters, musicians, directors of photography, etc.) in Mediterranean Europe;
-The importance of Film Festivals.
