João Pinharanda gives a conference in Cycle of Visual Arts 2014

João Pinharanda, art historian, critic, curator and current cultural programmer of Fundação EDP will be the next guest of the Cycle of Visual Arts 2014 to take place on the 30th of April, by 3.30 pm,in Universidade do Algarve, Campus da Penha (Amphitheatre 0.4).

With intense activity as curator, since the 1980’s until today, the former artistic director of Museu de Arte Contemporânea of Elvas is coming to Universidade do Algarve for a conference where he will share with the audience some of the most important moments of his personal and professional experience. This event intends to promote a sharing between the academic and artistic universe, allowing for a reflection about the state of the arts in Portugal.

About the guest:

João Pinharanda was born in 1962, in Lisbon. Art historian, art critic and curator, is the current cultural programmer of Fundação EDP. He was the artistic director of Museu de Arte Contemporânea of Elvas and an influent art critic (Expresso and Público newspapers) that has accompanied the 70’s generations until today. He has also developed activity as a curator, since the 80’s until today, from which several events can be highlighted, such as: “7/10 – 7 artistas ao 10”, Galeria de Exposições Temporárias da Sede – Piso 01, CAM, 1999; AICA/MC Artes Plásticas, Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado, 2011; exhibitions of Manuel Baptista, presented at Fundação Carmona e Costa (Escrever Paisagem – Desenho 1960-1970) and Fundação EDP (Fora de Escala – Desenho e Escultura 1960-1970), both of 2011.

He was invited lecturer at the Architecture Department of Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, between 1997 and 2002 and invited lecturer in the Master Degree in Gestão de Mercados de Arte (ISCTE, Lisbon) between 2009 and 2013. Between 2004 and 2007 he was also the President of the Portuguese Section of Associação Internacional dos Críticos de Arte (AICA) (International Association of Art Critics).

He is currently the organizer of the Art Awards of Fundação EDP (Prémio EDP – Novos Artistas e Grande Prémio EDP) and is also responsible for the Art Collection of Fundação EDP.
