AVANCAGIGANTES IS THE MOST RECENT FILM PROJECT IN THE ALGARVE CURATED BY ANTÓNIO COSTA VALENTE

AvancaGIGANTES – Algarve 2022 is a project of educational and cultural dynamisation that marks the 25th anniversary of the AVANCA International Film Festival and is curated by CIAC researcher António Costa Valente. Being “cinema for those who are always growing”, the project involves about 1500 students from the Algarve, from pre-school children to young people in secondary education.

At the end of the school year, films are shown for all ages, selected by level of education from the Schools’ Groupings of: Albufeira, João da Rosa – Escola E.B.1 da Cavalinha (Olhão), António Aleixo – Escola do Pontal (Portimão), Vila do Bispo and the Loulé Secondary School.

Addressing themes such as the environment, human and intercultural relations and the relations with art and cinema itself, AvancaGIGANTES – Algarve 2022 gathers short animation films mainly from Europe (Belgium, Slovenia, France, Italy, Macedonia, Czech Republic and Turkey), but also from the rest of the world (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, USA, Japan and Singapore). Several Portuguese films are part of this selection, such as Amo-te Cigarra by Francisco Lança, the very short “Galope” by Raquel Felgueiras or the surprising film A Tua Vez, created by the awarded Olhanense filmmaker Cláudio Jordão and choreographed by David Rebordão.

AvancaGIGANTES has the support of the Portuguese and International Federation of Film Societies (FPCC and FICC), the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (through the Program “JCE – Juventude, Cinema, Escola” and the Program HARPA – História, Artes e Património do Algarve) , of “RBE – Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares” and the Program PEEA – Educação Estética e Artística (PEEA – Artistic and Aesthetic Education). This event in the Algarve is coordinated by Isa Catarina Mateus, with the participation of the teachers responsible in the schools: Manuela Jorge, Isadora Mateus, Anabela Gaspar, and Maria do Carmo Chaves.
