FARO MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OPENS EXHIBITION CURATED BY MIRIAN TAVARES ON MARCH 12
Tomorrow, 12 March 2022, at 6pm, the exhibition The Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves in the work of Costa Pinheiro, curated by CIAC coordinator Mirian Tavares, opens at the Faro Municipal Museum. The exhibition gathers a significant part of the exhibition “Kings, Ladies and Jacks – The Imaginary of Costa Pinheiro”, from the collection of São Roque Gallery (Lisbon), and will be open at the Museum until 5th June 2022. CIAC is a partner in this project.
The Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves in the work of Costa Pinheiro presents a collection of paintings and drawings that preceded many of the works first exhibited in Munich in the 1960s. Costa Pinheiro played a central role in the context of Portuguese art in the 1970s, and the evolution of his painting encompasses aesthetics, but also social and political ethics. The painter’s rediscovery of figuration initiated a language that was consolidated in his series Os Reis (The Kings), Costa Pinheiro’s most emblematic work. This series earned the painter the Burda Prize at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 1966.
The São Roque Gallery brings together a body of paintings, drawings, watercolors, gouaches, engravings, and serigraphs, totaling 82 works on paper and on canvas. The pictorial series essentially portrays eight kings from the first dynasties, three queens, a notable knight, and three princes. The works that will be on display at the Faro Municipal Museum are part of a larger group, whose exhaustive analysis has allowed the artist’s creative process and the iconography of the works to be revealed, until then considered random.
