EXHIBITION
RUDOLFO QUINTAS PRESENTS “NEWS FEED 2022” PIECE AT SÓNAR+D LISBON INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
On April, 8th, 9th and 10th, Rudolfo Quintas, multimedia artist and CIAC collaborator, exhibited the piece News Feed 2022, at the Beato Creative Hub, during the international conference Sónar+D Lisboa. Based on data painting, an artistic practice that uses data as the basis for creative expression, the piece addresses the relationship between current affairs and mental health.
News Feed 2022 questions the sustainability of journalistic practices as we enter the age of ‘infodemias’. Using custom software developed by Quintas and Joan Sandoval since 2019, News Feed 2022 reads major news articles from around the world in real time, and subsequently ‘paints’ an impression on a screen. It is a continuation of Quintas’ work, which uses interactive, generative and artificial intelligence technologies, together with simple natural elements, to lay bare some complex issues and develop new perspectives. In this case, an artificial intelligence analyses the sentiment of each item fed into the model, using it to generate a sentiment representation of the tone of the item, depending on how positive or negative it is. A way to visualise the invisible and manipulative power of the media in the digital age.
This work is supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture / Directorate-General of Arts, in the context of the research project “The Constellation of Consciousness”, by Studio Rudolfo Quintas in partnership with CIAC – Arts and Communication Research Centre and Galeria FOCO. This is a project about the impact of artificial intelligence and Big Data in Social Psychology.
