INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
CIAC RESEARCHERS ATTEND THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIGITAL DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION (DIGICOM)
Between the 3rd and 5th of November 2022, CIAC researchers Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, Alexandre Martins, Bruno Mendes da Silva, and Susana Costa take part in the 6th edition of the International Conference on Digital Design and Communication (DIGICOM). The conference takes place at Teatro Gil Vicente, in Barcelos, as well as online.
Adérito Fernandes-Marcos presents on the first day of the event, at 10h00, as a keynote speaker. With the Communication “Digital re-materialisation: towards a post-digital perspective in contemporary art research and practice,” the researcher reflects on the emergence of a contemporary aesthetics—supported by the technological revolution—where tangible physical materials assume an equal role to the digital. The post-digital perspective assumes the digital as omnipresent, a liquid medium because it flows and submerges everything and everyone; transparent because ubiquitous and (to a large extent) invisible; also empowering because it underlies and is immanent through the very physicality of objects and materials.
On the same day, at 16h00, Alexandre Martins and Bruno Mendes da Silva present “Digital wor(l)ds – using dynamic typography as a mean of artistic expression in digital and audiovisual settings.” This communication brings an analytical and critical view on the semantic, aesthetic, and emotional role of the written word and dynamic and interactive typography in audiovisual and digital environments. This communication is part of an ongoing project that foresees the conception of multiple exhibitions and artifacts, which will start from the written estate of Fernando Gonçalves Lavrador, in an attempt to converge word, image, and movement.
On November 4, at 15h15, Susana Costa presents the research project “The Enredo game-installation: a proposal to counter hate speech online,” co-authored by Mirian Tavares, José Bidarra, and Bruno Mendes da Silva. The project suggests the use of digital media and strategic games to create safe platforms for dialogue, debate, and awareness about hate speech. It is also based on the concepts of media literacy and Information Literacy, which are important not only to understand and analyze the phenomenon of online hate speech but also to develop strategies and tools that prevent it.
DIGICOM 2022 is organized by Escola de Design do Instituto Politécnico de Cavado e Ave and Research Institute in Media Design and Culture (ID+) with the support of the Research Center for Communication and Society of the University of Minho (CECS-UM). The conference aims to be a place for reflection and analysis of the constant challenges of design and digital communication for society, institutions, and brands.
