11th edition of the ‘Jornadas do CIAC’ conference in February

CIAC – Centre for Research in Arts and Communication is holding its 11th ‘Jornadas do CIAC’ research conference on February 09 and 10, 2017, at the University of Algarve (Amphitheatre 1.5 of the Pedagogical Complex on Penha Campus).

As usual, this scientific meeting aims to promote debate among the centre’s researchers, who share their research and results here, not only with the scientific community, but also with the general public interested in themes associated with communication, culture and the arts.

In this 11th edition, we highlight the organisation of a thematic session dedicated to newsreels, which will include the special participation of Luke Mckernan (curator at the British Library) and Maria do Carmo Piçarra (postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Communication Studies and Society, at the University of the Minho, and at the Comparative Studies Centre of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon).

According to the event’s general coordinator, Sandra Boto, “the agreement to hold this special session came about fortuitously, during the 2016 ‘Jornadas’ conference, in an exchange of ideas with the group doing research on newsreels at CIAC. We have been developing the concept since then, and we have thus been able to present an interesting thematic programme.” In addition to the main conferences, the centre’s researchers will share their own projects, which will be discussed with the guests at a roundtable scheduled for late afternoon on the first day of work. On the second day, the ‘Jornadas’ hosts papers in other fields, such as literature, digital culture and regional culture.

“Our aim is to replicate this model, which we are beginning now, in future editions of the conference, which will thus feature special sessions in keeping with the interests of the different CIAC research groups,” explains Sandra Boto.

The 11th ‘Jornadas do CIAC’ Conference, organised in partnership with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and with the School of Education and Communication of the University of the Algarve, is free to attend and when you sign up at the venue you will receive a certificate proving your attendance.
