LECTURE

Pedro Ferré is the next guest of the Cycle “Mestres e discípulos nas Artes, nas Ciências, nas Humanidades” (Masters and disciples in the Arts, the Sciences, the Humanities)

The lecture “Mestres e discípulos: da Literatura aos Estudos Literários” (Masters and disciples: from the Literature to the Literary Studies), by Pedro Ferré and organized by CIAC under the scope of the seminar cycle “Mestres e discípulos nas Artes, nas Ciências, nas Humanidades” (Masters and disciples in the Arts, the Sciences and the Humanities) will take place on the next Saturday, 12th of April in Universidade do Algarve – Faculdade de CIências Sociais e Humanas, room 2.35 at 11 am. This free entrance event is held under the scope of the Masters Degree in Comunicação, Cultura e Artes.

The guest speaker, Pedro Ferré, full professor at Universidade do Algarve, will explain the way literature, as school or craft, develops itself (both from its creative and its exegetical viewpoint) creating a profound relation between masters and disciples and “showing how art is, simultaneously, memory and invention”.

Biography: Born in Lisbon, he is full professor of Universidade do Algarve since 2000, where he lectures mainly Spanish Literature. Previously, he has been a professor in Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht and in the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He is currently curator of Fundación Menéndez Pidal from Madrid and has published a vast international work about traditional poetry.

Abstract: Under the scope of the notion of school or craft (as in the Middle Ages it was explicitly named), appears the fascinating relation between masters and disciples. Literature (both from its creative and its exegetical viewpoint) develops itself also under this double perspective and, thanks to it, questions itself, showing how art is, simultaneously, memory and invention.
