NAVEGAÇÕES MAGAZINE PUBLISHES AN ARTICLE BY A CIAC COLLABORATOR

The article “Mia Couto: Mourning and Melancholy in The Mapper of Absences”, written by CIAC collaborator José Paulo Cruz Pereira, was recently published in volume 14 of Navegações (Journal of Culture and Portuguese Language Literatures).

The aim of this study is to observe, in the character of Diogo Santiago (the intrafictional author of Mia Couto’s latest novel, The Mapper of Absences) how, in his experience of returning to places of his childhood – to the city of Beira – mourning and melancholy play out. This analysis is followed by insights from Freud, Judith Butler, Maria Torok, Nicolas Abraham, Marie Claude Lambotte, and Jacques Derrida.

Navegações is a biannual publication of the Postgraduate Program in Literature at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul and the Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures of the University of Lisbon (CLEPUL). Its purpose is to disseminate unpublished works related to the various literatures of the Portuguese language and to the cultures of the countries in which they are produced.
