ARTICLE BY MIRIAN TAVARES PUBLISHED IN DATJOURNAL
The article “Das poéticas e da poética analógico/digital de José Maçãs de Carvalho”, authored by CIAC coordinator Mirian Tavares, integrates volume 6 (nº4) of DATJournal. It is a publication of the Graduate Design Program of the Anhembi Morumbi University on the theme “Design + Art + Technology”.
“Das poéticas e da poética analógico/digital de José Maçãs de Carvalho” explores the Archives of José Maçãs de Carvalho, a contemporary Portuguese visual artist. The series begins in 2011, with Arquivo nº 0, and extends through 2017, with Arquivo e Democracia. The project is an open work that was created over the years and uses as material the artist’s archive of photographic and videographic images, built during his trips to China.
José Maçãs de Carvalho, unlike many of his generation, did not attend the country’s Fine Arts courses, having an initial training in Modern Languages and Literature. His work focuses mainly on photographic and videographic media, later migrating to digital media (without losing sight of his large archive of photos and images captured during his stay in Macau, as a scholarship holder of the Fundação Oriente, in the late 90’s). His work reflects a deeply contemporary issue – the archives – and has its own cartography because, more than a purely artistic project, it is also a curatorial project.
