ARTICLE BY ANA ISABEL SOARES PUBLISHED IN ARTE E CULTURA VISUAL MAGAZINE

The article “Dom Bernardo, film-manifest?”, written by CIAC researcher Ana Isabel Soares, was recently published in the second issue of the magazine Arte e Cultura Visual. Dedicated to the Centennial of Ernesto de Sousa (1921-1988), this issue is a tribute to the career and the work of the artist, filmmaker, journalist, essayist, curator and professor.

When Ernesto de Sousa directed Dom Roberto, his mode of creation coexisted with the urgency for political and aesthetic change. The construction of the film follows at the same time his modern view of art – photographic, cinematographic, literary, musical – and his performance in the civil and political sphere (mirrored in his role as one of the most important driving forces behind the film club movement).

Based on the film Dom Roberto and on the numerous analyses of which it has been the object, Ana Isabel Soares seeks to reflect on the poetic place in which the work of Ernesto de Sousa is positioned, through the echoes it displays of other cinematographic works and contemporary artistic projects (such as the exhibition and the photo-book that Victor Palla and Costa Martins developed in the months preceding the film’s shooting).

Arte e Cultura Visual is an annual magazine of the Centro de Investigação e de Estudos em Belas-Artes (CIEBA), which is dedicated to visual arts and culture, seeking a reflective, diverse, current, problematizing and organic discourse, which allows focusing on the devices of art and artistic images in their ontology and contexts.
