ARTICLE BY MIRIAN TAVARES, BRUNO MENDES DA SILVA AND SUSANA COSTA PUBLISHED IN SPRINGER BOOK

The article “Tackling online hate speech? Play Your Role!” presented in November 2021, at the 10th EAI International Conference: ArtsIT, Interactivity & Game Creation, authored by Mirian Tavares, Bruno Mendes da Silva and Susana Costa, was recently published in a new book from Springer. Under the title ArtsIT, Interactivity and Game Creation, this is a publication with Web of Science and Scopus indexing, edited by Matthias Wölfel, Johannes Bernhardt and Sonja Thiel.

“Tackling online hate speech? Play Your Role!” analyzes methods to combat online hate speech through gamification and video games. Starting from the project “Play Your Role: Gamification Against Hate Speech”, funded by the European Commission’s “Citizenship, Rights and Justice” program and related to UN Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), there is presented a set of complementary and interrelated tools (such as online video games, fuzzy games and educational itineraries) to counteract online hate speech. It seeks to make the culture of games and networked social spheres a driver for the promotion of media literacy and digital citizenship.
