ESSAY BY CARLOS VIDAL PUBLISHED IN ARTE TEORIA MAGAZINE
The essay “Contradições Livres: Álvaro Cunhal, entre o neo-realismo colectivo e o formalismo individual”, written by CIAC researcher Carlos Vidal, was recently published in issue 22 of the journal Arte Teoria. This is a thematic issue dedicated to neo-realism in Portugal.
Carlos Vidal reflects upon neo-realism, as a defining movement of a phase of Portuguese modernism (in literature and painting); and its relation/opposition with surrealism. He draws on studies by José-Augusto França to look at the work of the painter and writer Álvaro Cunhal, his progressive tendency and his dilemma with formalism.
Arte Teoria is a publication of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, which disseminates research work linked to the Centre for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEBA) and other national and international research units.
