NOTE OF CONDOLENCE
We report with deep regret that our beloved teacher and researcher, Vítor Reia-Baptista, one of the pioneers in media education in Portugal, passed away.
Vítor Reia-Baptista was responsible for the creation of the Communication Sciences degree, which he directed for many years at the Algarve University, as well as one of the founders of the Research Center for Arts and Communication, which he integrated from the beginning.
With a degree in Comparative Literature, Drama-Theater-Cinema, by the University of Lund, he received his doctorate from the Algarve University in Communication in Education, with specialization in Media Pedagogy and Film Languages. He had a Master’s Degree in Cultural Communication from the University of Lund in Sweden and a Master’s degree in Social Communication from Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Vitor Reia-Baptista dedicated his scientific research to Literacy, Media Literacy and Cultural Contextualizations of Cinema. He was also a member of the Expert Group of the European Commission in Media Literacy, a consultant to the British Film Institute for the European Film Literacy project, coordinator of the Laboratory for Film Studies of the Center for Research in Arts and Communication, and participated in several projects of the European Commission.
Vítor Reia Baptista was born on January 18, 1954 and died today, August 16, 2018, aged 64, victim of an extended illness, at the Hospital Universitário do Algarve in Faro.
