PROJECT
CIAC researcher Vitor Tomé is one of the authors of the book “Digital Citizenship Education: Overview and new perspectives”, published by the Council of Europe on Thursday, September 21, and consists of a literature review focused on Education for the Digital Citizenship, co-authored by Divina Frau-Meigs, Brian O’Neill and Alessandro Soriani.
The book was launched during the “Empowering Digital Citizens” conference, which marked the launch of the Council of Europe’s “Education for Digital Citizenship” project (see official website), which aims to create a model for effective integration of Education for Digital Citizenship in the curricula of the 47 countries that integrate the institution, in addition to creating resources to train teachers and so that these teachers can use in the pedagogical activities developed with their students. During the conference, which ended on Friday, September 22, the Education Division and the group of eight specialists who develop the project, of which Vitor Tomé is a member, shared the results of the work developed since March in 2016.
It also sought input from participants from various countries, from international experts to representatives of Ministries of Education and other European institutions. For now the literature review and the results of a consultation on good practices in international terms have been presented, as well as a document called “Discussion Paper”, in which the researcher’s postdoctoral project, underway in the municipality of Odivelas, is recognized as a good practice in methodological terms and in the area of teacher training.
The researcher’s project, which began in 2015 with FCT’s post-doctoral scholarship (second three-year period), has enabled 50 teachers to be trained in Digital Citizenship Education, currently involving about 40 teachers in the field, 600 pre-school students and 1st Cycle and their families, as well as the school and educational community of Caneças. However, it will be extended to other education cycles and to other schools during the school year. The post-doctoral fellowship of the researcher ends at the beginning of 2018, but the continuity of the project by the municipality of Odivelas is already guaranteed, following the approval of an application to the POR2020, which the municipality presented and which was approved with an investment of around 400 thousand euros in this area, until the end of 2019.
