XVI JORNADAS CIAC: TRIBUTE TO PEDRO FERRÉ

PROGRAM OF THE XVI JORNADAS CIAC CLOSES WITH A ROUND TABLE IN HONOR OF PEDRO FERRÉ

Tomorrow, 25th of February, at 15h40, is scheduled a round table at the XVI Jornadas CIAC to honour Pedro Ferré, Emeritus Professor at the University of Algarve, Member of CIAC’s Scientific Council, Founder of CEG – Centre for Galician Studies (UAlg) and General Coordinator of the Portuguese Romanceiro Archive.

Pedro Ferré has dedicated his scientific activity (published in Portugal and abroad) to Iberian studies (romance of the modern oral tradition, ancient romance, Spanish and Portuguese literature), highlighting his role in the cataloguing and inventorying of the Portuguese Romanceiro. Besides CIAC and CEG – Centre for Galician Studies, he has developed research in foreign centers such as the Institute Seminario Menéndez Pidal (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). As a result of this work, which started more than 30 years ago, he published, among other works, the first description of a national ballad corpus (Bibliografia do Romanceiro Português da Tradição Oral Moderna, Madrid, 2000), as well as the first four volumes of Romanceiro Português da Tradição Oral Moderna. Versions published between 1828 and 1960, given to print by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, since 2000. Still under his direction, the Portuguese Romanceiro Archive was created.

He has a degree in Literature from the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon (1978) and a PhD in Romance Literatures from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, New University of Lisbon (1987), where he was aggregated in 1996. He taught at the Universities of Lisbon, New University of Lisbon and Algarve, and abroad at the Universities of Utrecht, Cologne and the École des Hautes Études in Paris. On December 15, 2021, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of the University of Algarve. In this institution, he was the first President of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (a position he held several times), Pro-Rector and Vice-Rector. He was also the founder of the Institute of Romance Studies (New University of Lisbon).
