António Branco
António Branco has a degree in Languages and Literature from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (1989) and a PhD in Portuguese Literature (Medieval) from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of the Algarve (1999), where he obtained an aggregate degree in Arts in 2012. After teaching Portuguese and French in the Third Cycle and Secondary Education in various public schools, he taught at the University of Macau (1990-1991) and the University of the Algarve (since 1991). He was a professional actor between 1979 and 1983 at Teatro do Mundo, an independent theater group in Lisbon (founded by Manuela de Freitas, Jean-Pierre Tailhade, José Mário Branco and Fernanda Neves, among others, as a result of a split in Comuna – Teatro de Pesquisa). In 2006, he founded the theater group A Peste – Associação de Pesquisa Teatral, in which he maintained a regular activity as an actor, staging and directing actors until 2015. He has been curator of José Mário Branco’s estate since 2020. He was rector of the University of Algarve (2013-2017).
Research Interests
After a period dedicated to Medieval Portuguese Literature and issues of Portuguese Teaching, she has devoted her most recent scientific activity to theoretical and practical research into the Art of Representation (history and methods) and its Teaching, both from a vocational perspective and from the perspective of Education through Art. At the moment, she is studying the estate of José Mário Branco. Part of this research has been realized in A Peste shows. He is a member of the Arts and Communication Research Center (University of the Algarve), of which he was the founder and first coordinator.
