Carlos Vidal is an artist, critic and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. He has a doctorate in Fine Arts/Painting from the University of Lisbon and is an Aggregate Professor at the same faculty, as well as being a member of the National Academy of Fine Arts.

As a visual artist, he took part in prominent collective exhibitions in the 1990s in Portugal and abroad and has published several books on art and aesthetic theory (including: Irreducible Shadows: Art, Love, Science and Politics in Alain Badiou; God and Caravaggio, both Lisbon, Vendaval; Invisuality of Painting: A History from Giotto to Bruce Nauman (all published in Spain: Madrid, Brumaria; the 3rd edition of God and Caravaggio came out in English, God and Caravaggio, 2020).

He has participated in collective books, including work for Over Here: International Perspectives on Art and Culture, New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (The MIT Press, 2004, 2nd edition in 2007) and forewords to books by Alain Badiou and Hal Foster.

Research Interests

Politicized art, political art; art and aesthetics or art and unaesthetics (according to Alain Badiou, in defence of the concepts produced in/by art); politics; music (from Bach to the present day, especially interest in the “Wagner affair”); Italian and Spanish baroque, especially Spanish baroque (the baroque in Seville, all the dimensions of the Siglo de Oro: from mysticism to painting – research and work published in Spain on Murillo and Velázquez); theories of the avant-garde; contemporary art, current art (art critic for “Público” from issue “0” and in the first year of the periodical).
